Re: restaurant recs please

  • Well, it's always safe to try Frontera if you like Mexican. This is authentic--no burrito and rice here! Frontera is downtown on N. Clark St. If you're looking for "Surf and Turf" you should check out Ruth's Chris on N. Dearborn. And, of course, you should have pizza--I always recommend Giordano's.

Enjoy and have a great trip--this is an amazing city!

  • sepia, blackbird, and avec are great choices in the west loop! All are close to each other, too, so maybe you can hit all 3 (drinks, dinner, dessert).
  • If you can get a reservation- I highly recommend Topolobampo, Rick Bayless' higher end restaurant.  It's pricier than Frontera grill, but well worth the price.  It might be tough to get a weekend reservation there though.

Another good one is Alinea.  Plus I agree with the pp recs of Blackbird and Sepia. Mercadito is also excellent.

  • There is also Charlie Trotters, Everest, Tru, Graham Elliot (featured on Top Chef Masters), Spiaggia (Chef was a finalist on Top Chef Masters this year).  There are many high-end restaurants to choose from.

  • If you're foodies, you'll have a great time at Moto...very adventurous!
  • If you guys are foodies & price really doesn't matter,  try Alinea.  It was voted one of the best restaurants world wide.  A heads up the tasting menu is $150 and the tour menu is $225.   So that might be a little pricier than you were thinking.  I am trying (unsuccessfully) to convince DH to take me for our 5 year anniversary.

Otherwise, i would ditto the Rick Bayless restaurants.  I would also recommend Sprout in Lincoln Park.  It has been getting good reviews and it was by one of the Top Chef Runner Ups.

  • If you want some smaller neighborhood places, our favorites are Sweets & Savories on Fullerton (BYOB) , Fillipos on Clybourn and Tango Sur (BYOB) on Southport. Great food and the prices aren't too bad.
