Seagrass care - how to keep it from drooping
I tried googling this but only came up with care for seagrass rugs, hats etc.
We have several mature seagrass "bushes" in our yard but 2 of them are drooping and growing outward more than upward. What could be the cause and what can I do to get them more upright?
Re: Seagrass care - how to keep it from drooping
I don't know what kind it is but here are 2 pictures. They get about equal sun.
These are the 2 that are drooping:
This is one of the others that get to be about 7' tall. I got them all at the same time.
That is not seagrass, it is Miscanthus sinensis, or Maidengrass, and it looks fantastic.
The ones by the fence aren't drooping any more than the one by the patio, the only difference is that you can see all around the other one.
In both photos, the foliage is arching over and slightly brushing the ground. The ones by the fence have to lean out a little, and the wood edging comes up higher on the side you're viewing the plant from. Kind of like the side of the grass that's facing the patio- if you could only see that one side of that plant, it wouldn't look very different from the two by the fence. And if there was a fence behind it, it would aslo be leaning away from it.
They all look normal and very healthy to me. I'm jealous!
One more thing- they might also be different varieties of Maidengrass.
And I could also be wrong about it being Maidengrass, but I don't think so! Post more pics when it blooms!
Thanks for sharing the proper name and the compliments on them. The one that is standing upright gets to be about 7' tall at it's peak. The ones by the fence don't really exceed about 3.5'. The picture of the ones by the fence was taken from our 2nd floor vs the other which was taken straight on. I bought them the same day at the same place so I am assuming they are the same type.
Could it possibly have anything to do with how I cut them down in the fall? Maybe I cut the ones by the fence down to low? Do they need higher dried up stalks to stand higher?
Yes, they do get beautiful blooms in the fall. Unfortunately, we had some stray cats around the past few years who thought it was fun to run and jump into them so they didn't last long.
BTW, don't you have your 5th anniversary around now? I remember telling DH I would quit The Knot once you got married so I know it was not too far after our wedding. I can't believe 5 years has gone by so quickly!
If you count the years we were married in God's eyes
it's actually thirteen years this month. Yes, time flies!
He's just as romantic as ever.
LOL
Miscanthus- the varieties seem to ALWAYS get mixed up in the nurseries. I installed 3 for a client last year. They all looked the same and were labeled the same. But they aren't the same! Two of them are 4' tall and one of them is a cute little 8" tuft. Another client had a row of 5 Miscanthus, all perfectly uniform except for ONE little runt. Go figure. Maybe this is what can be expected when we buy Miscanthus??? It has nothing to do with cutting them.
Thanks for the kind words, sweetheart. Drop me a line anytime. ((((((sqeeeeeze))))))
I know what you mean! We'll be together 16 years next month! I'm glad your DH is romantic and hope he has something special in mind for your anniversary! Mine isn't romantic at all (we went back to Cancun for our anniversary which was all my doing) but I still love him!
Thanks again for your pro insight on my maidengrass!!!
Do you not SEE the YAWN face??! Hell no he has nothing special planned. If we do anything, it's going to be because I planned it, same as you. Good thing I didn't want kids- I'd probably have to knock up my own damn self.
