Re: non toxic, no/low-voc paint

  • SW has a line with low-voc called Duration that is supposed to be able to stand up to wear and tear pretty well. Their no-voc line is called Harmony.

BM has a line called Aura as well.

Olympic has some, I think Valspar has a line as well. FWIW, we're using Duration by SW.

  • For non-toxic, I think your only chance is milk paint.

As for low VOC, almost every latex paint is low VOC. Low VOC doesn't mean much. In fact, paints like Martha Stewart that are labeled low VOC, I consider green-washing because if you read the label and compare it to, say, conventional Behr--they both have the same amount.

What you want is zero VOC, knowing the tha pigment will add a small amount of VOCs with most brands (Home Depot's Fresh Aire is one brand with zero-VOC pigments, but the colors are very limited). We have done our interios painting with Olympic from Home Depot. It is zero VOC (before pigment) and is about $18 per gallon, which is cheap. It is more watery than more expensive paints, needing two coats plus a third touch-up coat. But, since really any paint needs two coats to look awesome, I don't find that to be a bif drawback.

  • I have some info in my blog about it. What I would recommend is that you get a non-VOC base. When you add the tint  you can get nonVOC tint or lowVOC tint (depending on the company). That in my mind is what gets you non-VOC vs low-VOC paint.

We went with a Sico low VOC (noVOC base by lowVOC tint) because the full noVOC base and tint was twice the price.

  • I've sampled a bunch and I found Benjamin Moore's paints to be the easiest to work with.  They also happen to have the most extensive color selection (they can't even get all the colors on the wall...ask for the fan decks...there are three of them).
