Help my pepper plants please...

This is my first year with a square foot garden.  Everything I started from seed in it is doing well so far.  My bell pepper transplants (that I bought) are not looking so hot.  They looked much better before I planted them!  They aren't growing, and the bottom leaves are turning yellow and falling off.  We've had a lot of rain lately... but I thought peppers liked water?  My jalapeno plant is doing very well, and my banana pepper plant is doing pretty well... both have blossoms.  But the bell peppers need some help.  I'm planning on putting down some sweet peat to mulch.  Any other suggestions?  And yes they get at least 6-7 hours of sun in the location they are in (when it's not stormy and gray outside, anyhow).

Re: Help my pepper plants please...

  • did the pepper transplants say how many days to maturity?  how does this compare with your hot pepper seed packets?

Last year my bell peppers flowered way after my thai and cayenne peppers. They also seemed to grow much slower.  Perhaps that's the same with you?  Also, as my pepper and tomato plants age, the very bottom few leaves do tend to yellow & fall off.

If the plants otherwise look healthy (as in, most of the leaves are a good green, the plant isn't droopy, etc), then I'd say wait & see what happens.

  • ours did the same thing until the temps reached the upper 80s/low 90s the last 2 weeks, now they are growing again :)  Just give them some time!

  • We planted three bell pepper plants. One of them had yellowing like you mentioned, but it so happens this one has turned out to be the biggest, with the most flowers, and the most peppers so far, so I don't think it's a definite  indication the plant is doing badly. Ours grew slowly as well until the temps got up consistently, now they're growing like crazy.
