poison ivy?

Hi, I have never posted on this board, but I need help identifying this plant.  It is growing up our wooden pole, that holds our direct tv dish.  Thanks for you help!image

  • I was coming here to ask the same question!!!  I'm glad it isn't poison ivy.  I have a lower than normal tolerance (my M.D.s words) for poison ivy.
  • Poison ivy only has 3 leaves.

  • Yep, this is Virginia Creeper (in the grape family; though not edible).  It has 5 leaflets that radiate out from a central point.  The Latin name "quinquefolia" actually means 5 leaves.  Occasionally the leaflets will come in threes (e.g. on young plants), but they'll always radiate out from a central point.

    Like pp said, poison ivy has three leaflets, and the middle one is on a longer stalk than the lower two.  Also, the two lower leaves often have a "mitten" like shape, with a larger "thumb" tooth on the outer edge.  See, for example:
