Canon D-SLR users

Have you purchased any additional lenses?

If so, which ones and what do you use them for?

I'm having a lot of fun with the lense that came with the camera, but I'd like to start making a list of wish list lenses for the future.

The camera is used for pretty much anything - I like to play with the macro settings and my brother wants to get into nature photography.

Re: Canon D-SLR users

  • and...now I shall confuse everyone by using the new SN
  • I haven't purchased any new ones, but on my wish list are:

    Standard and medium telephoto

If you wanna do more nature, I suggest this, which is also on my wishlist.

    Macro kit

Actually...they're all on my wishlist but those are my top two!

  • I highly suggesting renting some first to see which ones you like before buying. I made that mistake. haha

I rented the Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS once and LOVED it. It's VERY expensive so that's on the really far wishlist for me. lol You can zoom very far with this. It's not ideal for up close though.

  • The Nifty Fifty (50mm f/1.8) lens is always a fun one to get.  I have lenses I've paid over a thousand dollars for and I still occasionally use my $100 Nifty Fifty for things. The 28-135 IS lens is another one you can get for REALLY cheap because it's the XXD kit lens that takes pretty nice pictures.

If you have the money the 24-105mm f/4L lens is a great walk-around lens.  Really, if you get that it's the only lens you'll ever need unless you want a bigger zoom or like primes. I got mine for about $900 second hand but in pretty good condition.

If you like Marco you really can't beat the 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens.  It's AMAZING!  I do all of my detail shots with that lens and have gotten some amazingly detailed ones!

If you're into prime lenses the best thing to do is plot out what range you want (28/50/85 is a good set) and then slowly start buying the lenses when you get the money.   This will cost about the same as buying a good zoom lens and while you won't have much flexibility the image quality for primes are generally better than zooms (unless you're dealing with L series).

    That detail shot is great!

If you asked me a few months ago if I would ever get into photography - I would have said no way!  I love it now though.  Such an expensive hobby :)
