Strawberry Question

So I'm a total newb at gardening and I am trying to figure out if I can lay down some corn gluten pre-emergent in my strawberry patch or if this will effect the strawberries from making those baby plants take root in the soil.  Clearly I have no idea what is going on so if anyone can clear this up for me that'd be great.  Also if anyone has other weed preventing strategies for strawberry patches that'd be great too!  BTW currently I just have a layer of straw down which is kind of working to prevent weeds but doing a great job of retaining the moisture in the soil.

Re: Strawberry Question

  • My strawberry patch doesn't have a lot of weeds. The only weeds are right on the edge. My patch is pretty thick and I've let the runners spread so it makes nice ground cover when not in season
  • I don't think the corn gluten pre-emergent will effect the strawberries but I bet it is too late for the corn cluten to be effective.  Contact your master gardener extension, they should know.  My extension has a phone hotline.  Mulching is your best bet as a natural preventative.
