Cleaning up after pets

I feel like our last big dependence on disposable plastic bags is our pets - plastic bags for cleaning the cat box and little baggies for cleaning behind the dog on walks. How do you reduce when it comes to pet waste?

Re: Cleaning up after pets

  • Our dogs generally only poo in our backyard (they're both trained to go on command), which we clean up at least once a week (or before every mowing).  It doesn't eliminate the need for bags, but greatly reduces the number we use.

There are also things, like the Doggie Doolie (a pet waste composting system), which a lot of people seem to like - it doesn't work in heavy clay soils however, so we can't use it.

  • My sister and I are the same way -- cat litter cleanup seems impossible without sturdy plastic bags. I did discover these on one of my favorite websites -- they are biodegradable bags made from recycled plastic and designed just for pet owners! I figure no one can be totally 100% EF but every little bit helps.

  • Thanks for your suggestion Lucyboo! I am going to go check those out
  • on walks we use the bags that the newspapers come in and at home we just add it to our regular garbage outside.

we also have heavy clay so we can't use a composter thing

  • We use the recycled, biodegradable bags.  We carry bags to the store, so we don't plastic grocery or store bags coming into the house anymore.
  • I asked the same question in the California post below. I would much rather re-use store bags for cat litter disposal than have to buy new, single use ones!
  • My dogs usually go in our yard and we compost the waste.
