allium question

I love how these plants look, I have a few tall purple ones and then some short, white ones, and I've heard that they are supposed to multiply themselves. This is the second summer blooming (I'm in zone 5) and third year in the ground. Is it true that after the blooms have faded, I can break the stem, plant that in the ground with the spent bloom, and it will become a plant for next year? If not, any other tips on getting these buggers to spread? I think I actually have less blooms than I started with...

    Ninth Anniversary

A friend gave me the spent bloom of one and told me to plant the seeds from it to get more, but it takes a long, long time for them to mature this way, I?m told. So far mine haven?t multiplied, and I don?t know if they will.

I found this on the net, though:

Alliums are spectacular plants and it's worth saving a few seeds to sow in the spring to grow some more for the garden. The seeds will germinate quickly and reach flowering size in a couple of years.

    • Do it:

      September - October

    • Takes just:

      20 minutes

    How to do it

    1. Cut the seedheads from your allium plants as they start to break open. Bring them indoors and let them dry out before tapping out the seeds and storing them in labelled paper envelopes.
