Help! we are being over taken by flies

I'm at my wits end.

Our house has a huge fly infestation.

We did a thorough cleaning, there's NO food anywhere in hte house.

Yet every morning I get up there's new flies in our living room.

I killed around 80 on monday with the flyswatter.  It took a few hours, but it was kinda therapedic.

I tues and wed morning there was only 4-5 in the house, so I thought i got them !

This morning I went to the living room and our white couch was black!  I've never seen so many flies.  I almost lost it.

Sasha was running around chasing them.

I dont know what to do.

There' s no food, I can't smell anything bad.

People have told me that the only way to get rid of them is to find the food source (maggots).   But we haven't found any at all.

I can't take it anymore.   =(

Re: Help! we are being over taken by flies

  • could one of your neighbors be contributing to the situation? Ours hadn't cleaned up after their dogs for a few days, and BAM! Fly central at our place. I guess they cleaned it up , cuz I haven't seen the flies for about a week.
  • could eggs have been laid in the soil of a potted plant?

is there a bug bomb for flies?

  • That happened to our house too! Twice! They eventually went away and we haven't had problem since. I bought a fly trapper for the backyard, it's one of those things you put water into and they walk in there and can't get out. It's disgusting though, there's probably about 3" of dead flies in there! I kid you not! I got it at home depot.
  • If you have a garbage disposal, clean it and run some vinegar and orange slices down it. We've found the garbage disposal to be the cause of the problem the couple of times that we've had flies.

  • Jenn - white vinegar down the disposal?  think i'll try it just to clear the smell...you know the one that just lingers, even if it's run frequently and with lots of water.  TIA
  • Sorry I don't have fly problems, But I m sory you are going through that.

When I was at OSH they have an electric fly zapper for $25, it may be worth it.

When I lived in an apt I came home on one of those really hot days, after the house being locked up the entire day, ?and there were termites everywhere, I mean everywhere, the sofas, the carpet, even in my bed. ?OMG I was so grossed out.

I hate any and all bugs. ?Yuck! ?I feel for you!?

  • I second the rec about the plants! Definitely leave your potted plants outdoors for a few days. It's likely the cause. We had a major fly infestation here in the office and that was the culprit. Apparently the soil is a perfect breeding ground for flys. Ugh...

    hang in there!!!

I run a cup of white vinegar and a whole orange or lemon down the disposal on a weekly basis. It really cleans it out and keeps it from smelling.
  • the SAME thing just happened to us a few days ago.  my husband was going crazy about the whole thing, killing flies and counting the "casualties" I think that an egg hatched.... probably came in on one of the flower boquets that we brought home from the hospital...

did anyone send you flowers lately??
