Need help with my green onions

I am a total newbie at gardening so don't laugh too hard at my question. I planted onion sets about a month ago and she told me to plant them close together to use as green onions or farther apart if I want to grow regular onions. My tops are about 18" tall already! Does this mean on my green onions I have to use them all up now? How could I have green onions throughout the summer? Or could I just cut the tops off and they would regrow?

Re: Need help with my green onions

  • If you wanted green onions throughout the growing season, you should have done several plantings.  Like, plant some, then 2 weeks later plants some more, then another 2 wks later plant more, etc.  Then they would all "mature" at different times giving you a continual harvest of young onions.

You can thin out & use as green onions and let teh ones you leave (that are now further spaced) develop into regular onions.
