Has anyone used soap nuts for their laundry?

I've heard of them for awhile, but never really seriously thought about using them. I had a bad allergic reaction to detergent a few months ago so I've been using a dye/scent free kind. I was recently researching new detergents since my last purchase was kind of spur of the moment in desperation--I found a sample of soap nuts for only $3. I thought it was a good opportunity to try them out.

Any thoughts?

  • I don't use them regularly but I did do a sample and really liked them. They seemed to clean my clothes as well as any other soap.

  • I was not impressed.  They did not work well on DH's clothes.  He works construction, so mud, sweat, drywall dust, etc - the soap nuts didn't do well on it, especially the sweat.  It was fine for my office clothes, but my clothes don't really get dirty.

  • I use them and love them.   They work great for our clothes which are average levels of dirty, nothing crazy.  I would give the sample a try.
