Swim lessons

The heartbreaking post from Gina got me thinking when is the best time to have your child learn how to swim?

We will probably never own a home that has a pool, but I still want my child to learn how to swim. It only takes a second for something to happen and if God forbid something happens and they fall in they would at least know how to save themselves, hopefully.

I didn't know if there was a certain age that they say to start taking them for lessons.

Re: Swim lessons

  • around here there is 1 lady who does mommy and me classes for kids ages 1-2. Everyone else starts them at 3. Luke needs to go, but he won't be 3 until september..:(
  • I'm starting Bug this summer.  There is a certified program in Destin that starts them at 9 months =)

    *Gasp* lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • We'll probably do it early too. DH never learned to swim properly, he just picked it up himself and is not very confident at all. My dad can't even swim! My mum is trying to get him to learn now but he's too embarrassed to do it, we're trying to convince him that it's never too late.
  • I'll have Chase in the pool by next summer, so he'll be about 10 months.  I want my kids to know how to swim and be confident in water just in case anything happens.
  • i started taking lessons when i was 1. the lady that kept me had a pool.

Infant lessons are popular around here, and I think it's a good idea.  They can't swim, but they can at least learn how to float and save themselves.

My sister and I did swim lessons when we were 4 and 5.  I Loooooved it :)  When DH & I have kids, I will definitely be signing them up for lessons!

  • I never took swimming lessons as a child, and never learned how to swim properly. I always knew how to tread water and swim around in general, and I was always confident in the water.

I will say that open water swimming terrifies me (lakes, ocean, etc), but that has nothing to do with lack of swimming knowledge.

I will probably enroll my child in swimming lessons as early as possible, because I do think it's a good skill to have.

  • I'm thinking I might start them out whenever the earliest we can do it.
