How did things go last night with your neighbor and the horses?

Re: ~mamaofmoose~

  • MUCH different than I expected!  I went to Tractor Supply, as planned, and picked up two equine dewormer kits along with a huge bag of sweet feed.  I brought my dog and went up to their porch.  I thought I'd be there a few minutes but it was a long time!  I asked gentle questions without passing judgement about what they're planning to do with the horses and it seemed like that was exactly what they needed.  (I told them I heard through the grapevine that they were trying to find a new home for the horses.)  They had a large family living in a small home and showed me all of the tack, feed and long list of supplies that they have to care for the horses.  It looked to me like they know exactly what they are doing-strangely enough!  They told me that one horse was a registered paint, 6 years old; and the other, a tattooed thoroughbred with papers, 12 years old.  They are looking to sell the horses, not give them up-for $1000 including the 2 horses, 3 very nice saddles and tack and everything to go along with them.

They told me that the man who owns the property they are renting has received so many complaints that he's asking them to let the horses go.  The only thing they said that concerned me was when the woman said, "People been tellin' him their ribs were showin' and that just ain't true!"  You can see their ribs from the highway though.  I again, tried not to pass judgement.  That's not my job.

I was relieved to see that they want what's best for the horses and that they're going to let someone else continue care for them (even if they're selling them for $1000-which isn't much at all for the horses.)  I never told them I had just been to Tractor Supply and out of concern for the horses, picked up food to donate.  I didn't tell them that I have been one passing secret judgement.  When a family lives as close as they do to a road/highway-everybody's going to have something to say about their livestock.  Two beautiful horses by the road will attract a lot of attention (obviously mine) and not everyone knows what's best for someone else's horses.  That's what I learned.

I also left with true respect for them because they had the most BEAUTIFUL purebred boxer.  She was brindle with perfectly semetric white markings underneath.  She had papers and was worth a lot.  They had her spayed because they didn't think it was right to destroy a dog by breeding her.  I respected that because I'm becoming more and more interested in volunteering at local shelters to help all of the homeless dogs.  I was impressed.  People struggling for funds would begin breeding their dog like that for extra income.  They did what they thought was best for their pet!  And their little girls fed my dog dinner with the boxer!  I had fun and am glad I stopped by.

  • I'm glad things went well!  It does seem they are trying to do the responsible thing.  I'm sure it is hard on them seeing their animals suffer like that.  You are so right,  $1000 for 2 horses, 3 saddles, and extra equipment is not a lot of money.   I hope they can find good homes!

    Thanks for the update!
