Chipmunks

Does anyone else have a chipmunk "problem"?  They've found ways to weasel into my netting blueberries and they have no issue slipping through the bunny-proof fence.

I think part of a solution will be cleaning out our untamed backyard (our house was vacant for a year before we bought it & it's taken us 2 years to get the front & side yards looking presentable.  The backyard will be tackled this fall).

Does anyone else have other ideas?  I'd prefer deterrents to traps at this point (aka, I'm not totally desperate yet!)

I should befriend someone with one (or all!) of the above & have their pet come out "hunting".  LOL! 

We used to have a resident hawk in the 'hood which is maybe why they weren't an issue last year?  Don't know what happened to him or if he'll come back & help keep the population down.  There were significantly fewer bunnies when he was here too..

Um yes we have a major chipmunk problem.  Well actually we have a major furry critters of all kinds problem!  Our rabbit population exploded this year and we've always had a lot of chipmunks and squirrels.  Our neighbor said when they moved in a few years ago they put out traps (I have no idea what kind) and caught 50 chipmunks in one week!!  I guess we're lucky we don't have that many right?

Chipmunks often live underground. You could try filling in the holes in your yard to see if that deters them - they're good at hiding them under leaves but in my experience the ground is usually spongier where their burrows are.  Truthfully the only thing that worked for my parents were pets in the yard.  After the dog and cat died two years ago the population in their yard exploded.  Can you offer to petsit for a week? That might be enough time to make them consider moving?  They do reproduce fast so a few chipmunks will turn into dozens in one year.
