Best Places to Live in Chicago

Hello Chicago Nesties!

I'm thinking of relocating to Chicago from St. Louis- for Grad School.

I've been looking at- Columbia College-Northwestern and DePaul-

FH works as a high school math teacher-

My question is- where are the best places to rent in the city or that are a short commuting distance "the burbs". Good school districts for FH to work in? We're planning a trip to visit some friends in October- so I'd love to check out your suggestions.

Thanks!

Jess

Re: Best Places to Live in Chicago

  • I live in Loyola Park, which is on the north side... up next to the beaches along Lake Michigan and less than 3 miles from the suburb of Evanston (where Northwestern University is). Loyola University/Campus is a 5 minute walk (about 2 blocks) as well.

We are a 5 minute walk (door to door) from the Loyola red line that takes you into downtown within 30 minutes on the CTA and all the way to Evanston if you wanted  to hit up their shops and restaurants.

There is a k-12 Waldorf school and a public school within walking distance (about 2 blocks) from us as well. Our condo is available for rent and you can check out the details below.

  • this is a really tough question to answer.    all if this depends on where you go to school and where dh gets a job.    the "good" school districts are mostly in the suburbs.     and Columbia, northwestern, and DePaul are all in different parts of the city.    So where you'd want to live for a short commute is entirely dependent on his job and your school.

Also... it depends on your budget, how much you want to pay per month, and how big of an apartment you want.    Rents will vary widely by neighborhood.

All of that being said... I really like South Loop, Andersonville, Lincoln Square and Oak Park.

  • As far as a "short commute", what do you mean? How long do you want the commute to be? The better schools are out in the suburbs, usually 30+ minutes from the city, at least.

That being said, if you still want to look in the city, I loved living in the Wrigleyville area, around Wrigley Field. It's a great area with lots of young people, a good vibe, and a 10 minute L ride from the Loop. Lakeview and Ravenswood are also very nice, and in the same area. Rents are astronomically high, but if you hit the right place at the right time you can get a good deal on a townhouse or a 2-bedroom flat.

  • Awesome. Thanks Ladies for your help- It is a tough question, but I appreciate all your answers! Can't wait to give your city a try!
  • I'll plug Hyde Park. It's quiet, pretty, and very close to downtown thanks to the Metra (commuter rail). There are some very good private schools in the neighborhood (public schools are mixed).
