Does this make me a bad person?

A friend of ours is getting married on June 26th...I was all set to go until I found out that is the same weekend as the American Library Association Conference and my job will pay for me to go.

I was going to pass until I realized that Toni Morrison is giving the opening address. I LOVE Toni Morrison. I have read all of her books. She was part of the subject of my Senior Seminar in college (it was on her and William Faulkner), thus she was part of my thesis. Bad news...she is speaking right during their wedding (which is also about 2 hours away).

DH has said he is fine going alone (his brother is going as well as a bunch of friends). ALSO, this friend is the groomsman that called us and told us he would not be able to come to our wedding the Wednesday before (he didn't have the $$...).

Does it make me a bad person if I skip the wedding in favor of going the ALA Conference?

Re: Does this make me a bad person?

  • You would be a terrible person if you didn't go to the ALA Conference!  I don't think he'll care.
    Matt loves Munkii!!!
  • Go to the conference. Your DH will represent the both of you at the wedding.

    Get a picture with Toni!

Sorry, but I disagree with the other ladies. If I was your friend and you cancelled on my wedding last minute (remember how you felt?), I'd be upset... and especially for a conference, regardless of who is speaking. Just try to picture yourself explaining your reasons for not being there and imagine how that would make them feel.

  • You're not a horrible person for feeling that way!

Did you already RSVP yes though? If you did, I think I agree with kelnyc, that you should probably go. If you didn't I think that DH going will represent the both of you and that you should go to the conference!

    This!

  • It doesn't make you a bad person, but if you already RSVP'd it may seem kind of "shady"....but if you really want to go to the conference you should go!  Opportuniites like that don't come along everyday...but neither do people getting married.  But no it does not make you a bad person...
