Being green outside the home

I've been noticing (and cringing at) the packaging used at restaurants and other public places.  Obviously cooking at home or not buying the products that are in a ton of packaging is the best way to go, but we just aren't there yet every single day.

What do you do to minimize your footprint in these situations?  Do you only go to certain eateries or buy things at certain stores that have minimal packaging?  I don't know how many times I wish I could roll in to our favorite take-out place with my re-usable containers and ask them to put my food in those. lol

Re: Being green outside the home

  • Depends.  Some places, like Java Juice, where everything comes in styrofoam, I just don't go to anymore.  Other places, that have ok stuff and some bad, like our favorite bagel place, I just bring my own water bottle so I don't have to use their styrofoam cups.   Subway loves to put each sandwich in it's own plastic bag, and I just ask them not to...they don't seem to care either way.  I would love to bring my own containers for take out!
  • I usually bring my own tupperware to restaurants for leftovers (in my huge handbag).  Usually it's just my husband and me--I refrain at very upscale places or for business events.
  • I stopped going to places that use a ton of packaging, especially Styrofoam.  I try to frequent places that have real plates, silverware, and cups, like Noodles & Company or the food itself has no packaging like Chipotle.  I bring Pyrex containers when I'm going to a place I know has big portions, like our local Thai place.  That Pad Thai makes a big dinner and a nice lunch.  I also have a Chico Bag attached to my purse, so I haven't needed a plastic bag for a trip to the store in ages.

  • Have you ever asked your take out place if they would pack your food in your containers? They might - it saves them money.

I carry a bamboo spork in my purse to avoid plastic cutlery. I also have a travel mug in my car to avoid paper/syrofoam cups. I also keep reusable bags with me.

  • Uncanny - where did you get your bamboo spork?
