f/u where do you eat?

When you were a kid, did you eat at the table as a family? All the experts seem to say it's what you should do, but I know most of my friends families didn't.

Re: f/u where do you eat?

  • We did in the house I lived at until I was 11.  Then in the new house, we ate around the kitchen island, but still all sitting down together.....at least until I was about 15.  Then life got so busy that dinner what catch as catch can.

  • I probably ate more dinners at my grandparents' houses than I did at my house, but we pretty much always ate together at the table (at one grandmother's it was around the kitchen island, but still together)

  • We ate at the dinner table all while growing up.  But it's funny because MH and I eat in our basement in front of the TV with a TV tray ;)  If we ever have a little peanut I'm sure our habits will change and start eating at the table together.  Whenever MH's DD comes to our house we do eat at the table together though as a family.

  • We ALWAYS ate at the table. It was really important to my parents. I loved it because it was the one time we were all together for the day. There was NEVER a dull moment!

I have thought about what we'll do, how to keep it fun and relaxed and how we'll keep the conversation flowing... one suggestion was to have a box of index cards and have each person say the highlight of their day then at the end of the year you can go back and read about it. I think that's a really fun idea.

  • The rule in our house was you could ONLY eat at the table.  We always ate dinner together, even if we had to shuffle the time due to sports schedules.  Many times, the TV was also on, but at least we were all sitting there.
  • When my Mom was still married to my Dad, we ate dinner around the table every night at exactly 5:30.  He was kind of strict...  Once he moved out, we still ate at the table for most meals, but Mom would occasionally let us eat in front of the tv.
  • i grew up in nyc and until i was about 13 we ate in the dining room-had help growing up so we were served-alwats required to sit and have proper conversaton and we had a salad at the end of every meal.
  • We ALWAYS ate at the table together.  It drives me nuts that we don't do this now, especially when the kids are over.

We ate at the table as a family all the way until I left home for college. And it's still that way whenever I visit.

  • We always ate at the dining room table. It's still that way when we go over to visit every Sunday. =)

  • We always ate at the table.  I can remember doing this even when I was in high school.  My sister and I had to wait for my parents in our high school years because they commuted 2.5 hours one way.  My sister and I were the ones making dinner most nights.

My dad always liked the TV off so we could actually talk about each others days but that didn't fly with us.  There was always some show to entertain us all!!

    I miss those days!

  • We did until I was about 14-15, and then for some random reason we started eating while watching TV. I have absolutely no idea why we changed! Eating at the table is something I want to do with our kids though. Smile
  • We usually ate at a table in the kitchen and sometimes at the more "formal" table in the dining room (although that was usually only on special occassions).

This is something I want to address in our family now...we have a small kitchen table but my DH has been using it as a desk/study area so we never eat at it.  We have a dining table but it takes up too much space in our "great room" which is dinky so it's not accessible for more than one person to sit/eat at a time.  Now that we're looking to start Libby on solids I want us to find a way to have everyone around the table for a meal.  Right now we either eat in shifts or sit in the living room with plates on our laps.

  • My Dad worked days most of his life so we ate same time same place as a family every day.I wish I could of did that with my family, but hubby and I work opposite shifts and my kids are coming and going.Every one in a while when every one happens to be home at dinner we eat together.
