iPod Touch battery is dead -- what to do?

My two year old iPod Touch has a dead battery.  For a few weeks it was looking its charge super quickly (if I recharged it fully and then played it for a half an hour, the next morning it would be dead), but now I can't even get it to turn on.  This seems like an awfully quick death for a lovingly used iPod that was only used for a couple of hours a week.

I took it to the Genius Bar and they had nothing interesting to say about why the battery died, but the only option I was given was to replace the iPod with the same make and model at the "special incentive" price of $79.  The Genius Bar guy said that they can't replace the battery.  $79 is a good deal, but I'd have to deal with the annoyance of figuring out how to get my thousands of songs back on the iPod (it is not backed up to my hard drive because I don't have room for it), to remake my playlists, etc.  I would imagine this will take hours, particularly to upload all of the CDs.

I could take it to an authorized repair place in my city -- they seem to charge around $49 for battery replacement.

The third option is to look around on the internet for batteries that I could replace myself (not sure how tricky that would be, but I am not great at doing these kinds of things), or to send it out to somewhere (but those kinds of places aren't *that* much cheaper than the local repair places.

So opinions please!  Thanks!

Waitaminute, how do you add new music without having it all on a computer?

I would first explore the option of getting the battery replaced at an iPod repair place.  If that bricks it, do the $79 thing.

  • I would try to get the batter replaced at an iPod repair place first as well. And I'm also confused why you don't have the music on your computer? Don't you update using iTunes? We have all our music on an external harddrive that is connected to the PC in our office. Nowadays you can buy a 1TB harddrive for less than $100. That holds a lot of music!
  • I can tell you from experience that a battery for a ipod touch is fairly cheap, around $20.

The difficult thing is opening and installing the battery. The battery is sodered to the logic board. You would also need to buy the tool needed to open the ipod as well.

It isn't an easy process, take my work for it. DH replaced my battery earlier this year and is getting ready to install a new one on his.
