I saw that you are going to sit for the CPA exam. What do you currently do? Are you in public or private?

Re: *Jaye*

  • Private right now.

I'm currently a staff accountant at a non-profit org.  My previous organization was also a non-profit, and I think that's where I see myself staying.

Part of the reason I'm taking the exam though, is to open up the alleys for going public if I decide to - it's never interested me though.

  • I did 6 years of public accounting and the past 2 have been private. I don't think I'll ever go back to public. I'm the only senior accountant at my job that doesn't have my CPA. On a side note (I don't know what the rules are at your job) but a non profit we work with is I think is still in need of a volunteer bookkeeper. I don't know anything about non profit accounting.

  • Our senior accountant doesn't have a CPA either :)

Surprisingly I hardly know anything about non-profit accounting...I just sort of threw myself into it blind.  I'm learning I guess - and looking forward to getting to the government/non-profit parts of the CPA review, since I never got that in school.

I never saw accounting as the end career for me, so I want to stay where I'm happy for the time being.  My mentor (old boss) is adament that I should at least "try" public...I'm not so sure.
