Window herb gardening?

I'm thinking that maybe I need to start growing some of my own herbs so I can have some fresh ones on hand when I try out new recipes. Anyone have any advice on where to start? Is there a good kit for the basic herbs (basil, thyme, etc) or am I better off buying everything separately?  How long do they take to grow? How do you know when they're ready for consumption? I've never messed with herbs before, so I apologize for asking something that may be very very simple. TIA!

I need to do this, too - fresh herbs are so stinking expensive! 

I'd go to lowe's/home depot and just ask...I do remember one lady trying to convince me to start them from seeds.  that just seemed like a PITA, but they didn't have plants at the time.  I bought pots at ikea over a year ago and they are currently sitting empty on the ledge.

I grow herbs every year. I also end up killing them every year because it's so hot and I don't water them. The key is to find a good spot where they get sun but aren't gonna get killed by the heat in July/August. This year I put them on my back patio, near the door on a bakers rack. I think this will work much better. I bought them from Wal-Mart already started. Use good dirt. Mine are doing really good this year and I think it's also because I used the good dirt. You just pick them as you need them. I know for basil you need to use it because it will start flowering and not producing as much. This year I have: basil, oregano, dill, thyme, mint (mojitos!!), and cilantro
