As noted in my post below, I MIGHT be moving to central pa. I grew up in mechanicsburg so Im fairly familiar with the area but still drawing a blank on one issue...can you help me identify some nice places to live within about a half hour commute of mechanicsburg that have something like a downtown? Im used to areas like west chester, wayne/ardmore on the main line, shadyside in pittsburgh etc...if you know any of those areas. Im thinking camp hill and hershey...yes? other thoughts or ideas?

Re: Downtowns in Central Pa
Also, since you mentioned cost of living being one of the major reasons you are considering the move, I would point out that houses in downtown Camp Hill tend to cost more than many other places on the west shore. At least, that was our experience when we were house searching a couple years ago.
And taxes in Derry Township (Hershey) are INSANE!!!
good luck!
