*Mrs. Destructo*

Hello! Welcome to the board! I don't post much, but I do have a question for you.

Do twins run in your family? If so, who had them before you?

My Grandma was an identical twin. I've never really thought one way or the other about it skipping generations and happening for us, but the other day I dreamt I had twins! It got me thinking. So I was just wondering if that happened with you?

only fraternal twins run in families, because you have to release more than one egg

at least that's how a medical person explained it

  • The PP is correct - the tendency to release more than 1 egg at a time is genetic, so if there are fraternal twins on the woman's side of the family she has a greater chance of having twins herself. I know of several women who are fraternal twins and have fraternal twin children.

The current thinking in the medical/scientific community is that identical twinning is nothing but a fluke of nature.  However, there are theories that identical twinning may be genetic on the man's side, where some men may have an enzyme in their sperm that breaks apart the eggs, sometimes rendering two viable halves that grow into two people. Identical twinning is fairly rare (1 in about 250 live births), so these theories are hard to prove.   There are rumors in our family that my husband's grandfather was a twin, but his twin died in early infancy. My H's great grandparents were very prim and proper and didn't really talk about this stuff so we'll never really know.

Mrs. D I saw your response in the baby names post, and had to say I've never met another person fond of the name Atticus.  My H isn't really a fan, but I've loved that name since 6th grade when I read To Kill a Mockingbird.

I've loved it ever since I read the book too! I tried to talk my H into it when I was pregnant, but he didn't like it. I bullied him into reading To Kill a Mockingbird and he still didn't like it. But NOW that our kids are 2.5 he likes it. It figures :-p

  • Wellllp looks like baby #3 can be an Atticus then  Wink

  • HAHA, nope. There won't be a #3. The 3 of us are lucky to be alive, I won't be risking another pregnancy.
