Seriously....(maybe tmi)

So my OBGYN office has an online paitent portal, this morning I got an email saying the results of my pap and all that came back, so I logged in just to double check everything was fine...

Last year they said that my uterus was swollen and then sent me for ultra sounds to see what was going on... all that came out normal so I thought I was all good to go and nothing was wrong.

Ok now back to this morning, I logged in to see the results expecting to see negative i was surprised to not see that it said ASC-us.  Umm.... what?!?

so after some online research i found this....

ASC-US: This abbreviation stands for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. Under the old system of classification, this category was called atypical squamous cells, just ASC. The new system requires the reader to pick one of two choices to add at the end of ASC: ASC-US, which means undetermined significance or ASC-H, which means cannot exclude HSIL-see below

HSIL: This abbreviation stands for high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion. Under the old system of classification, this category was called CIN grade II, CIN grade III, or CIS

The word "squamous" describes the thin, flat cells that lie on the surface of the cervix. "Intraepithelial" indicates that the surface layer of cells is affected. A "lesion" means that abnormal tissue is present. These important terms - LSIL and HSIL - are described in greater detail below.

So, first of all Cj and I have been going through a lot with his family right now we have to have a family meeting on Saturday... So I am already emotional about all that crap, there is more detail on everything but i don't really want to get into all that right now... so needless to say i really just wasn't wanting to have anything comeback this year with the girly parts...but what does ASC-us mean? like what is that, should i be concerned, I am going to call my doctor at 8 but i just wanted to see what you all thought and or knew about all that stuff since I know we have a few nurses around these parts :)

TIA and sorry that turned out to be a lot longer then i thought...

  • Awww, Jenn! Don't freak out!

First, I am anything but a medical professional.  I have had some abnormal paps and some kind of wonky cells.  Maybe like your, idk?  Anywho, I had to get this simple out-patient procedure where they 'froze' and "scraped off' the cells (sounds creepy, but like I said SIMPLE).  Then I had to get some paps more often and such.  That was like 5 years ago now at least.  A lot of women go through something similar.  We have very complicated bodies ya know!

Having a family meeting, huh?!  GL with that and try to push the stress and doubt from your mind about the other stuff :)

  • I had this too, about 10 years ago. Back when I had it it was called cervical dysplasia. The first thing my doctor did was something called a colposcopy, which is basically a pap smear on steroids. They wash the cervix with vinegar, which makes any abnormal spots more obvious, then they take little samples from whatever abnormal spots they see and send them off to the lab for analysis. Sometimes a colposcopy is all you need, but sometimes you need further treatment. I ended up having cryosurgery, where they froze my cervix with liquid nitrogen. I have a freakishly sensitive cervix and it was very painful for me, but for most women it isn't much more uncomfortable than a pap. I was back at work the day after my cryosurgery.

I'm not certain, but I think that LEEP is becoming a more common treatment for abnormal cells. With LEEP the doctor burns off the abnormal spots instead of freezing them. My sister had LEEP done awhile ago - definitely not fun, but she was back at work the next day.

Anyway, this was a long winded way of saying you really should call your doctor and schedule a followup appointment. Good luck!

ETA: I forgot to say that my cervix has been completely free of abnormal cells since my cryosurgery. Please try not to worry too much about this, it is so, so treatable and VERY common.

  • I just called the doctor's office and had to leave a message so now i just have to wiat for them to call me back.... i hate waiting... :(

  • I have nothing to add other than that I'm surprised your doctor has not called you to discuss any abnormalities...finding out via an online portal is ridiculous!

I'm sorry, and I hope it all turns out okay.

Usually my doctor won't even tell me results over the phone - definitely not via a message - so I really hope you get to talk to them today.  When things like this happen we all have the tendency to start googling things and panic sets in...crazy doctor.

I'm sure everything will be alright, are you calling today?

Yes, I called and left a message with all possible contact numbers... so no i am just waiting for her to call me back.... I know, since they just used abrivations it took awhile to find any kind of information.

  • Oh Jenn, I'm so sorry you have to deal with all this crapola.  I just wanted to say I'm sorry and that I'm here for you if you need to talk.

Since I don't have anything to add on your med. issues, I will take this time to talk about the BS family meeting.  I cannot imagine having one of these, that just seems like the epitome of awkwardness.  GL, try not to stress about their comments.  These last four months are the most exciting, and they cannot ruin it for you.  ILs just suck; since our IL situation is similar to yours, maybe give our approach a try:  avoid them like the plague.

I am soooooooo looking forward to tonight you have no idea! lol i already put the fashion squre info in the GPS!

  • I think you pretty much got your answer already, but I had this a few years back as well and I had the LEEP. Had I gone to my 3 month check-ups like I was supposed to I am sure that it would have been done and over with by now, but I am SO BAD about follow up appointments unless they are schedule right then and there. But I just want to say, as scary as it all sounds, it is really a simple and minor outpatient procedure to fix it. Just sty on top of your follow ups and everything should be fine.

One more thing I will say, go to a Dr your OBGYN HIGHLY recommends if they don't do the procedure in their office. I was in Flagstaff at the time and the joke of a doctor caused too much scaring or something and wound up shortening my cervix, should be fun whenever we decide to try to have kids. But I am the only one of my friends who have had this problem and I have a handful that have all had the same procedure. They haven't had any issues afterward. So just make sure whoever you go to has good recs and you will be fine.

    Lol, you're funny.

MILs are the devil.  My ideal resolution to our situation is for Casey to stand up to his parents and defend us (i.e.: shut them down so they never open their mouths AGAIN).  I cannot believe she's talking about you to CJ, WTH?!?!?!  Does CJ stand up for you or just not respond when she says that kind of stuff to him?

Casey is all about avoiding conflict, so he just ignores the problem and when the ILs say anything negative, he just doesn't reply.  To me, that is letting them think you're rolling over for them.  That is not the case.  I would LOVE to share my actual feelings with my MIL, but that won't ever happen.

  • I think other people already answered your question, but I just want to say don't get too worked up about this!  I had ongoing issues for about 3 years with abnormal cells on my cervix and also had a colposcopy (x3) and a LEEP procedure.  It wasn't terribly horrible and if it comes to that I can give you the details of what to expect.  During that whole ordeal I had to get pap smears every 3 months which is not really my idea of fun Tongue Tied.  But, I have now had I think 3 or 4 normal pap smears and I'm back to yearly ones like a normal person!  If you want to talk more about it just PM me Smile
  • I have nothing to add other then, you're in my thoughts and prayers!

Remember, everything happens for a reason! :)

    Hugs!

  • I'm sorry your dealing with this. and i'm shocked the Dr didn't call or have her nurse call to go over the results. I'm starting to think this is normal practice at a Dr's office as they left me high and dry on lab results recently too.

I know everything will all work out. Try not to stress about it. ::hugs::

  • You've gotten some good info. Just wanted to say try not to worry too much or stress over it -- it is actually a lot more common than you would think, and you should be able to correct the issue fairly easily. Keeping my fingers crossed for good news.

And sorry about the MIL drama. Ugh! You def deserve to enjoy the rest of your engagement without all the unnecessary stress and ridiculousness. Hang in there. Buca will make it all better.  ;)

  • So update to the day would be that i had to go test at our off site and they served us lunch, after lunch i got sick... BOO! Thus having to bail out on the GTG and shopping with Tay, so ladies Sad

So once I got back to my office I had 2 voicemails from the doctors office, even though when I left the message i asked for them to call my cell if they couldn't reach me at my desk but that is neither here nor there.  So i called back at 2 and when the front desk lady was trying to have me leave a message I said no that i needed to speak to someone now, that I already left a message and that i wasn't going to wait for another call back...

When the doctor's assistant came on the line she went over all my results, she said that my pap came back abnormal (duh!) and that there were abnormal cells and also I tested postive for HPV, which the lady made seem it was an STD but that is not necessarily true.

So i have an appointment monday to get a procedure done i think it was called a Copel (spelling?) then will have to do followup pap in aout 6 months or so. Also i guess there are antibiotics or something for the HPV.

Thank you to all of you for you help and support, it truly means a lot to me to know that everyone is so supportive on here.

  • HPV is SO common.  I think I read somewhere that 60% of women have it by the time they are 25 which is why there is a vaccine for it now.  Men carry it but have no symptoms of it usually and won't even know they have it until this happens to their partner.  I hate who are opposed to the vaccine say "my daughter won't get it because she's only going to have sex with her husband!"  Well... guess what, Mom... your daughter can very easily get it from her husband, too!  It can cause cancer if not caught soon enough, but only a few types of HPV do.  The rest are just annoying.

My advice is to make sure they have tested you for HPV for sure!  I went to a gyno once who called me a few weeks later saying I have abnormal cells and that I had HPV, etc. and needed the biopsy thing.  I ended up switching insurances a few weeks later and had to go to a different doctor for a follow up.  That one also came back abonormal, but the HPV test came back negative.  When my new doctor looked at my old charts she couldn't find anywhere that said the old doctor even tested for HPV!  I guess they just assumed that was the problem.

My problem ended up being something completely different which has a completely different treatment from abnormal cells caused by HPV so I'm happy doctor #2 didn't just assume like doctor #1 did.  Though my case was very rare.

Good luck!  I've had so many friends get LEEP procedures who said they were pretty pain-free, just a bit of cramping and discomfort and they were back to work/play the next day.

  • a few years ago, i had abnormal cells as well. i had a leep because it was too far along...so a good hunk of my cervix was removed. 6 months later i went in for my re-pap, and it was back so they froze off the cells. i've been good since then, so hopefully it's gone for good!
