I'm so lost on this! I had no idea it'd be so confusing. No official people can give me any answers.
My NH registration expires at the end of this month. I have the same insurance agent as I've always had since I started driving, who is based in CT, but writes for various companies, depending on who can cover her clients, who live all over New England. We've heard there is some MA insurance form or something that the insurance does for you to register your car, but since my agent is in CT, she doesn't know what it is. And for some reason, even though the company my insurance is through is based in MA and has MA resident employees, no one there has any idea what I need.
So, I have a car (I don't have the title, though, it's not yet paid off), I have a MA driver's license, and proof that I live at my MA house. What else do I need? And also, since my NH and new MA insurances overlap by only 1 day, how long does this process take? Do I risk having an unregistered car with this timing?
Thanks so much, I really appreciate any info anyone has!
Re: transferring car registration to MA
I'm an insurance agent! It can be a very cumbersome process in MA to convert an out of state registration.
Your agent should be able to walk you through the entire process and provide all the necessary paperwork, but what you need is:
-Tax exempt form
-RMV1 form to be stamped and signed by your agent
-Current NH registration
Don't hesitate to PM me. I'd be happy to help.
thanks!! we have all of those things except the RMV1 form, because my agent has no idea what it is/where to get it. I don't understand why the company she's writing for is also unable to get it, it's Quincy and they're based here! They should know! sigh.
I heard we have to have a credit check to register our cars- is this true? Because it makes absolutely no sense to me. And we don't need proof of residence??
Quincy Mutual? They may not have the form because the agent provides it. You can get the RMV1 from the RMV directly, but even if you give it to your agent they need a specific stamp to authorize. I'm guessing they don't have this stamp if they don't have the form.
Credit checks are not allowed for car insurance at this time in MA. They are only allowed for homeowners insurance.
No proof of residence needed to register a car. You should have provided that when you received your DL.
phew, this is making much more sense now. My agent's going to call up an agent near me to get that form stamped (I found the form online).
But... do I need to have my car inspected? In NH that's part of the registration/yearly license plate renewal process, and I can't find any inspection info for MA anywhere.?
Thanks so much!?
Yup, after you get your registration you have to get your state inspection and ask your agent about the "pre-insurance inspection". Sometimes the pre-insurance inspection can be waived. The state inspection can be done at most auto shops and some full service gas stations.
