I'm volunteering at the Farmer's Market tomorrrow :)

I'm such a dork that I'm so excited.  I've become friends with one of the vendors, so I stand next to her booth and we chit-chat all morning.  When one of her customers asked about her sugar snap peas, I chimed in with a recipe I love.  The customer said "you should work here!" and now I am! Big Smile  Here's the farm I'm volunteering for.

Getting up ridiculously early will suck, but in return I get to pick whatever veggies I want! Considering I spend the majority of my money at her stand, this will be time well spent.

Re: I'm volunteering at the Farmer's Market tomorrrow :)

  • I'm right there with you FM nerd : ) My market opened last Sunday, and here it is almost Sunday again. I set up the barricades on Saturday night, move them ridiculously early on Sunday morning, and work the market until I put the barricades away at 2:00. I begrudged the heavy lifting last week, but decided that it's like lifting weights, good for the body. And leaving with armloads of fresh produce and bread is a beautiful perk : )

It sounds like you will have a lovely, satisfying day! Enjoy : )

  • Wait, you get food for it?? *jealous*!!

I've been thinking about volunteering at mine, but... I already do a TON of volunteer work and I don't have a lot of spare time. Still, its a cause I care about! I think I may try to spare just a little time for the market. Maybe if I volunteer for end of market day hours I can look sad and get some veggies lol.

  • OMG Alisha it's so worthwhile! I had so much fun, and I'm learning so much about farming and salesmanship.  Getting to interact with all the other locavores was so awesome.  Plus, I get all the produce I want.  For working from 6:40 a.m. to 1 p.m., I took home this from the vendor I was working for. This is after the farmer prodding me to "take more stuff!":

    - 3 pints of snow peas

     - 3+ bunches each of oregano, thyme, rosemary, and lavender (they compost them if they don't sell!)

    - 4 large bunches of basil

    - 4 basil plants

    - two bags of compost (she charges $6 each for these!)

Just for working for a vendor, I get whatever I buy from other vendors half price.  The other vendors gave to me (so they wouldn't have to cart it home I assume):

    - Veggie cream cheese (I pay $5 for this normally!!!!)

    - 2 scones

    - 1lb spicy lamb sausage

    - Loaf of olive bread

All in all, I'd say about $120 worth of food if I had paid for it myself.
