Gnats/fruit flies in veggie garden

Does anyone have trouble with little gnats in their garden?  They seem to like to fly around in groups above my zucchini plants.  All of the plants new, and I don't really have any fruits or veggies yet..the gnats just fly around above the leaves. I don't think they are harming anything...but it's kind of gross.  Any ideas?

  • Are you sure they're flying, and not more "hopping" from plant to plant?  They could be flea beetles, which are about the size of gnats.  Flea beetles eat plants, they've decimated our eggplants.  I would take a good look at one and compare it to a flea beetle picture online.

  • I will have to take a closer look...but it seems like they are just flying in circles. I have seen little fruit flies do this before in areas where you can hike...with a lot of trees.  Actually, I have walked into little flying gnats flying around..lol...so gross.  Anyway, I will have to do some online investigating to ID these little guys:)
