wow

I just asked one of my 9th graders to put his mailing address on an envelope. I had already written his name on it in the right place. He wrote it where the stamp goes...yeah.

  • Indifferent

Is this the norm for kids these days?  I'm scared for the future.

  • Hmmm

The only thing I can think of is that not too many people send things through the mail anymore - it is all done online.  That is the ONLY reasonable excuse I can think of.

  • As a teacher I'm scared too.  I can't believe the questions I get asked sometimes.  It's getting worse.... much worse.... each year!
  • I asked him afterwards if he had ever addressed a letter before, and he said no! I was pretty surprised bc he is not a computer-type kid at all!

Just last week I was mailing out cards and had a full second of hesitation where I had to think through which side of the envelope the stamp went on.

I don't even know what I would expect a typical 9th grader to mail out.  Bday cards, etc are usually handled by parents, they don't mail out bills yet that young, any communication with friends is text message or email, probably any long distance family too would be email or phone (grandparents, aunts/uncles, etc.).  It's not that surprising to me really.

ETA: But, it's certainly an opportunity for a "teachable moment".

  • The same thing happened to me last year. At he end of summer school students can fill out a card to have test scores sent to them. I had to go step by step as to where the info goes and some still got it wrong. I feel your pain!

  • Really?  I can't believe that kids aren't learning this stuff.  In seventh grade or so we had to write a letter to a congressman, senator, the governor, etc. in an English class.  It stinks that it's getting to the point teachers are having to teach to standardized tests, and not teach real usable skills anymore!
