Anyone been to Mount Airy, NC?

DH is a HUGE Andy Griffith fan and has been wanting to go and visit the area.  I acutally made reservations last night, but with the passing of his boss we are going to the funeral this weekend.  So I pushed the trip back to the weekend after.

I was curious if anyone has been, if so do you have any recommendations as places to eat or things we should not miss.  Dont worry all the Andy stuff wont be missed!!  Oh and the wineries better get ready for me.........

Re: Anyone been to Mount Airy, NC?

  • I took our families there over this Thanksgiving past.  Um, it's a good thing your DH is a big fan of Andy Griffith, because really, there's not much else to town except that.  It's very cute and quaint, and bring an empty stomach, because there are 2-3 places they recommend you eat and those are very Andy-esque.

We got there around 1:30, left around 4pm and "did" almost everything but the cop car ride that Mt. Airy offered.  I'm not huge into the wine, so i'm not sure if that scene will offer better options for you.

Don't get me wrong, we enjoyed our 3.5 hour visit to Mt. Airy--very much, but we all really like "small town USA"...and this is VERY small.  :)

  • We took a mentally handicapped group that I work with up there for a day last spring.  It was nice.  We went to the little Andy Griffith museum.  It was neat and had more than just andy griffith stuff in there.  Small but neat.  You MUST eat at the Snappy Lunch.  It was featured on the show a time or two and has a really good (and huge) pork chop sandwich.

The biggest fan I know - the boy could watch the show all day long!  We figured it was all Andy all the time and that will make him a very happy boy.  LOL.  Believe me - we know small town, we have one stop light where we live, so it would be like just going around the corner for us!

    Thanks for the advice ladies!

  • I've been!  We went up in October of last year, mainly to visit the wineries.  Old North State is in downtown Mt. Airy and was really fun.  Don't miss out going downstairs and seeing how they bottle the wine, etc...  We also went to Round Peak Vineyards and I really liked it - very scenic view and nice people that work there!    Have a good time!!

Thanks Lace!  Although I am not a huge fan, I am sure I will have a ball just watching DH.  :-)  And he will have a ball watching me at the wineries...........tee hee hee.

  • Make sure to have lunch at Snappy Lunch downtown... and the drive in theater is awesome... I'm pretty sure it's the last operating one in NC! I think you get in for like $5 and it's a double feature.. and sometimes triple!
