My grandfather died a week ago, leaving my 93 year old grandmother alone for the first time in her life (she went straight from parents' house to marriage) and without her partner of 74 years. She has spent the last couple of years hardly leaving home, because she felt like she needed to be there for my grandfather every minute. She is still able to be fairly active for her age - she doesn't drive, needs a walker to get around and can't be on her feet for too long, though - and I'd like to take her out to do things in San Antonio whenever I can and hopefully show her that she still has a lot of life to live beyond being a wife and caretaker.
Anybody have any ideas of things we might do together? Obviously, going out to eat is an option, and I'll probably buy tickets to a matinee next time Broadway Across America has a show in San Antonio or the symphony is playing (though that isn't for several months). I also have a 2.5 year old niece in SA and she loves to spend time with her, of course, so ideas that would entertain a little girl and not totally overwhelm an old woman would be awesome too. TIA!
Re: Things To Do With Grandma?
Gondola ride on the riverwalk? IMAX (might make her dizzy tho? i know it bothers my grandmother) or just a movie.
Maybe something like a cooking class? or crafty class where you make jewelry or something?
I'm so sorry for your loss.
I think things as simple as going shopping or going to the zoo with your niece (when it gets cooler) would be great. Does she like bowling? Is she involved with a church and can maybe do more things through there like help with fundraisers and/or join a women's group?

Ok..this may sound really goofy. When my grandma was still alive, we (my sis, nieces and I) loved to take her to the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch. She and my nieces absolutely adored it!
It worked great as my grandma was in a wheelchair. You just drive through and feed all the animals.
I think just getting her out of the house will be a good thing. Drives in the hill country can be great. Bring her up to New Braunfels and I will meet you guys for lunch! I miss talking with my grandma, love older people and adore you!
