Hi girls - Baltimore Nestie here. My husband's job is relocating him to the Greenville area. We have just started our housing search and since we are from the MD area, we don't have any idea what we are doing or the best places to look. He can basically live anywhere from Charlotte, NC to Greenville, SC. We have a three year old son so we hope to find a single family home in a nice "family oriented" city/community with good schools. We would love to have tons of neighbors with kids so we can make new friends. Any recommendations for cities/communities in or around the area would be greatly appreciated! Unfortunately, we don't have the time or money to spend weeks house hunting in SC so any comments are welcome. You can email me privately at sncmackinnon@yahoo.com.
Thanks in advance!!!
Re: Movign to Greenville area
Since you don't have time to come down and properly scope the place out, could you rent for 6 months and get a feel for the area first, then buy? I don't think I'd ever be comfortable buying a house in a place where I've never been.
We live in Simpsonville (a suburb of Greenville), and we moved here from Fairfax, VA. We love it here!
Okay I have the neighborhood for you. My sister leaves in Easley which is about 20-25 minutes to Greenville. Her subdivision is called Edenberry. There are quite a few houses up for sale in there and they are building another phase of houses. I love her neighborhood and regret not living there. It is extremely family oriented (so jealous since my neighborhood pretty much sucks). Tons of friendly people. Kids galore. You would make tons of friends there. The schools in Easley are excellent. If you want links to the houses I know that are up for sale, page me. I am in the area quite a bit so I know a lot about it.

Greenville native popping in here.
Charlotte to Greenville is about a 2 hour stretch, so you might want to narrow that down, if you can. If you're heart set on Greenville (and it's a wonderful place to be), then here are my recommendations.
The North Main/August Road area of Greenville is incredibly charming and has a lot of young families/professionals. You won't find your typical neighborhoods complete with pool, tennis courts, etc., though. It's the historic district and the homes are smaller but more expensive. However, it's right downtown and close to just about everything.
The Eastside of town has more of what you're probably looking for. It was the original suburbia of Greenville. That area stretches from East North Street and Haywood Road out to Greer, to give you an idea of geography.
The Laurens Road/Gower area is also close to downtown and has a lot of young professionals with families, as well. Again, it can get pricey and the homes tend to be older.
As far as schools go, I've done both private and public in Greenville and have no complaints. Greenville has a magnet program, which is what I went through. It's a way for kids who aren't zoned for a particular school to be able to get a specialized education (ex: my middle school was aimed at the performing arts, DH's was aimed at foreign languages. He went to a high school with an IB program, I went towards one that was set up like a liberal arts college).
Personally, I've lived all over the town, and always preferred being closer to downtown. It just has a lot to do. Good luck and if you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.
I know about the Moore / Duncan area a little. It's North of Greenville about 30 minutes, but is nice and quiet. It's convenient access to greenville and Spartanburg, but doesn't feel like you're stuck in the city.
