Hosting a murder mystery dinner?
Has anyone done this before? I'm really excited about the thought of it and was wondering if anyone had any experience? Tips? Websites to check out? TIA!
Re: Hosting a murder mystery dinner?
Are you buying the script in a box kind? Making your own?
I've done a few. I wrote one for over 100 people -- that was a headache and a half, but it was a ton of fun. You have to think about LOTS of little details, though, and it's a lot to keep everyone involved/engaged.
If you're thinking smaller scale (which I'm guessing is the case), try to order or find a pre-boxed set. I'm a fan of the How to Host a Murder brand or Murder Mystery Party brand, which are available on Amazon. Each one is already pre-themed, so you can make your party match whichever game you select (Lethal Luau or Chicago Caper 1920s, for example). I believe they're all designed for 8 people, though I've done them where I've "double cast" the roles and had up to 16.
I've hosted five of these (small to large scale, like I said) and people always really love them. It's a good excuse for a costume party/dinner party.
I personally enjoy them. We've had two at our place before. It's great because some people get into them and it gives you a theme and structure to the event.
There are box sets you get that have invitations, audio, character assignments, etc. We find them at local game stores, but you could get them online too:

I'm sure there might be better prices elsewhere. But this is the brand we've done before.
i went to one a few months ago , it was a kit in a box, lots of fun. i would recommend thinking about the guests and who is going to be outgoing enough to enjoy bigger parts. the one we went to was written for 8 people but had 2 addition optional characters that would work well for people who are less outgoing.
its pretty important that everyone shows up so no parts are missing.
this is the one we did, only $25 on amazon!
theres a blog entry about the one we went to in my blog here
