Japanese Beatles

Hi Everyone,

In the last week I have noticed a ton of these Beatles mating on my flowers. But today it was gotten even worse and they are eating the heck out of my strawberry plant and some of my other plants. What is the best/most effective way to get rid of these ugly bugs before I start to lose my plants to them!

Thanks!!

Re: Japanese Beatles

  • get the bags that trap them. They work, they do take time though. The first year I put them up I had a tonne of japanese beetles. The 2nd year i had fewer than the first, the 3rd year fewer than the year before and this year I almost didn't bother to put up a bag
  • The bags are awesome.  We also got a spray for our yard, this year we had so many on our grass that it looked as if the whole front yard was moving.  So I put the bags up first and then sprayed.  I my head I thought that those that didnt die from the spray would fly away and into the bags.  It seems to have worked beautifuly so far!
  • I am in the st. louis suburbs and wow, in the last week they have starting swarming my trees and flowers.  Today I used powder my mom had which got rid of them.  I couldn't reach the top of my trees so I am going to get spray tomorrow.  My leaves look like swiss cheese and I am afraid all the leaves are going to be gone.

Oh, I used the spray last year and it worked very well.

  • Thanks for the advise everyone! I will go get the spray and those bags tomorrow before I lose any of my plants to those mean beatles!
  • One word about the bags... put them together inside. I put them together outside the first year when our beetles were really bad and they started swarming me.

This is one time I willl recommend Sevin. Spray it directly on the beetles as they are feeding and mating. If you spray them while they are on a flower, try to do so after they've already ruined the flower, and cut the flower off after you have sprayed it (so bees don't go to that flower and die).
