Thinking of moving to GA...
Hi ladies! I feel like this would be the best place to get some info on different areas near Atlanta as well as hear from some more people who live down there.
My husband and I are thinking about moving to Georgia {near atlanta}. We have friends who live in Duluth and Sugar Hill who we visit quite often and my husband really loves the south, the relaxed nature and of course the low prices!
Obviously we've been to the two areas I've mentioned above, but while looking on a map we also noticed some other areas of interest and were wondering if anyone could tell me a little bit about them {shopping, schools, how close they really are from downtown, etc}.... the other places are Dunwoody, Lawrenceville, and Dacula.I'd also be interested in hearing about any other places of interest or that you can recommend!!! We really don't want to be more than 45 minutes from downtown {which I don't know if these places realistically are that short of a drive} and obviously in a good neighborhood.
We plan on taking a trip down next month to tour different areas in person, but it's nice to hear from people who actually live there rather than just seeing it for a few days.
I feel like our friends who live down there won't tell us any bad thing because they really want us to move! LOL...

On the weekends, as long as there isn't a lot of construction going on, etc., you can get to downtown within 45 min from a lot of areas. We live wayyy outside the perimeter (first lesson: "perimeter" = I-285) and we can make it downtown in less than 45 min, no problem - on the weekend. During the week? Haha! Not happening!
Everyone here will reiterate what Sadlebred said. Live where you work. Traffic is terrible and commutes can easily be 2 hrs or more.
If he's going to be working in Atlanta, is he against using public transportation? If not, it can lessen some stress of the commute. If so, you may want to consider the Sandy Springs/Dunwoody area as a starting point as it's close to MARTA train stations and has a little more subburb feel without being far from downtown.
If he's going to drive the commute, then I'd suggest visiting during the week (if possible) to get a feel of the traffic. 400 is annoying, but not too bad (so you could look into further north of Sandy Springs into the Rowsell/Alpharetta areas).
IMO I-75 N and I-85 N on weekday evening rush hours are worse for longer stretches.

I've commuted to Atlanta from the Athens when I first got my job, It passes through Lawerencville and Dacula. It was a horrible commute. 2 hours each way in horrible traffic, I did it for two years and it was dreadful.
I agree with Saddlebread. Live closer to where you work. I also have friends that work in Midtown Atlanta that take Marta from Dunwoody instead of driving. They really enjoy that vs driving in.
