Looking for a Compost Bin

Hey all!  I've started working for a not-for-profit summer camp and we wanted to have a whole green initiative this year!  Another counselor and I are working together on this and have come up with some great ideas.  We already started recycling (which is frustrating and difficult in this county!  They don't pick it up, you have to go to the facility, and you have to make an appointment to go there and they're only open on weekdays... grrr!).  Anyway, we also want to start a compost!  But licensing regulations state that we need to have the compost in a bin- we can't do a compost hole or a compost heap.  So we're on the hunt for free (it's not-for-profit remember!) bins.  Does anyone have any idea where I can go to get some?  Google has failed me.

If it helps we're in Central Wisconsin and from what I can tell the county has no program set up for this.

TIA!

  • What about something like this? You should be able to find a store that will give you 4-5 pallets for free and just a few pieces of cheap hardware and you'll be set.

  • Home Depots have a set amount of money they can put towards community/charitable donations every quarter (or at least that is the case in California; DH was able to get donations for his Eagle project when he was a Boy Scout, and a volunteer organization we were in in college got donations from them as well).  You could give them a call or write a letter.  Even if they don't have the budget to donate a full compost bin, you could make some like this:

We used to make these at the school I worked at (and even sold them to parents as a fundraiser!).

You can also try contacting other retailers in your area that carry compost bins; you never know until you ask!
