Hey ladies...
Next April we are going on a big family trip to Aruba. Yay!
Just looking for some restuarant recs, as well as some daytime and nightlight activities. We will have Sam with us, so the day time activites should be able to accomodate a 15 month old.... although with the whole fam there, I am sure that they wouldn't mind watching her during an afternoon or at night if we wanted to go out and live it up a bit.
Also, who has gone through the process of getting a passport for an child... just curious as to how difficult its going to be
Re: Whose been to Aruba?
Amazonia (it's a delicious churrascaria(sp?) restaurant)
Flying Fishbone restaurant (do this on the day you rent a jeep to explore - it's far drive and/or an expensive cab ride... but definitely worth it! best food on the island)
Pirate's Nest is not that great - neither is the french restaurant (though i can't remember its name. it's located in the low rise district close to the Bucuti)
Baby Beach is soothing - perfect for Sam!
enjoy your stay also.... i love working with jen. she's a riot!
wear lots of sunscreen and reapply about twice as often as you think you'll need to. the tradewinds make the sun seem less hot/direct but i promise.... it will crisp your skin alllll day long!
YAY! You will looooooooooove it. My dad was born and raised there and I've been three times, most recently last summer. I actually put together a little packet of reviews of my favorite places, I can send it to you if you want! Just give me your email and I will send it along.
I will be listening to the passport advice too, because we're taking our peanut with us to Grand Cayman next spring, she'll only be 5 months old or so! Eeeek!
Kirsten, I would love to see your review packet if you don't mind sharing it with me!
My email is violntphem at comcast dot net
I will let you know how the whole passport procedure goes. Today we mailed out a request to the city of Hartford to obtain Sam's birth certificate (yes... 9 months old and we're just getting it now.... bad parents! bad parents!), and then I believe that both parents have to go to the post office with the paperwork to submit it. I'm also wondering if she'll need a passport photo... how hilarious is that going to be?!
Okey dokey, I think I have to send it from work because my stupid wireless internet isn't working at the new house yet, and it's on the other computer. Anyway, I will get that to you on Monday. And you can email me anytime with questions - but you are seriously going to LOVE it.
I've heard that with babies, they lay the blue background thing on the floor and lay the baby on it to take their pic. I seriously laugh so hard at the thought of our little tiny baby doing that - we'll have to get her passport shortly after she's born to make sure we have it in time for the trip. Let me know how that goes!
We had to get a passport for Mariella for our trip to Greece. It was actually very easy! We did have to get passport pictures taken, DH just held her on his knee and they took it. Its good for 5 years though, and she already looks different from the picture!
We had to fill out a form for her (you can download at http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/minors/minors_834.html) and bring all of us to the office, with the pictures, and write a couple of checks. We got it fairly quickly (less than 4 weeks).
I highly advise you to try to get a night flight. It really made things a lot easier on our trip. And Kristen, I definitely think going at 5 months is a perfect time! We brought Mariella when she was almost a year and it was quite a challenge. Very wiggly and trying to feed her was a huge challenge. But that was a 8 hour flight! Let me know if you have any other questions, I lurk more than I post. And have fun!
Me me me! Im actually here as we speak (back to the real world on Thursday )! This is our 5th visit to the island. Aruba is a great place w/ so many things to do. The one thing I would avoid doing is an AI. With so many great places to eat on the island you would be missing out by going w/ an AI. When get to the airport in Aruba take one of the red little switzerland bags they hand out (after you get your luggage before you head outside), they're filled w/ a bunch of coupons, maps and general info.
Check out the Aruba message boards. There are a ton of people on there who can offer a ton of advice! Im pretty sure the address is aruba dot com, it's been a while since I've been on there though.
