Hi everyone
I have been lurking for a bit now... and have never really had anything worth posting... but, I am proud to announce that my lillies have bloomed...
and, so far my tomato plant has not died (like my spearmint and lavender did)!
Re: newbie and aw...
I have become a sucker... my boyfriends aunt cut some for me from her garden last year, and I have fallen in love...
Not sure what kind these are... it said they would get 2-3 foot tall, they didn't.. maybe 1-2 foot...
I want to find some like the ones given to me, they were huge blooms of this beautiful shade of yellow! gorgeous!
I have some really, really tall orange lilies. With blooms, the plants are as tall as my 7 yr old! Which makes them over 4ft tall.
Here are two websites I visit to drool over lilies:
The Lily Garden and B&D Lilies. I've never ordered anything from them, so I can't tell you what the service is like. I ordered my orange lilies from Tulip World. I want to add some different varieties to my garden, but I don't know if I have any more room! LOL
What I need is one planting bed devoted to lilies. I could probably do it with one bed, but I don't feel like digging everything out this fall.
Awesome! Thank you!! I will deff have to check those sites out!!
this is the link to a post that shows the flowers that the fellow's aunt cut for me... the big yellow blooms were amazing (you can see in the photo to the right side, a phone.. that gives you an idea of how big the blooms were), also, if you scroll down, I posted photos when they were first growing...and the photo above my name is also one of the lillies from his aunt.
Those are BEAUTIFUL! It looks like it's an Orienpet Lily. Look at the ones on the B&D site and I bet you'll be able to find a similar variety there.
Oh - word to the wise - lilies multiply some kind of FIERCE! I dug up some lilies to move them and split some of the bulblets for my Godmother and her aunt, and let me tell you - I still had TONS of lilies. I probably gave them at least 25 bulbs and I still had more than enough. So, when you plant them in your garden, resist the temptation to plant them really close.
The smaller lilies (ones that are only about 2 ft tall) multiply by 3. My tall lily had 5 bulblets on it when I divided it. Give them at least 12-18 inches between them. They will grow in by the next season. I started with 5 lilies and three years later I had over 45.
My personal view is that all gardens should have lilies! I'll have to post pictures of mine later this evening for you.
Really?? See, I'm new to the planting world.. kinda.. I grew up playing in/and helping with my grandma's garden... but through college and such I always had a dorm, or small apartment that I never grew any sort of flowers outdoors... Now I have a patio area, and have started a "pot" garden... I have 3 lilies in a great big pot, and then have 2 smaller (8") pots that each have a single lily in it.
I did not know that their bulbs would multiply. My gram has some seeds from her (white) lily that she is going to give to me (I plan to give her seeds from the lilies I have)... Have you ever grown lilies from their seeds?
I would love to see the photos... and now I think you have ruined me, There are a ton of lilies on those sites that I would LOVE to have in my little garden!!
You've got a good start. Those pots should be fine for now.
And I tell people how fast they multiply because it totally caught me off guard. The second season after I planted those 5 lilies, I was like WHOA! Where did you guys come from?!
I've never tried to grow them from seed. I've only grown them from bulb. I heard it can be done, but it takes much longer for them to bloom. Even my smallest bulblets didn't bloom this year. They put out foliage, but no blooms. I don't expect them to bloom until maybe next year.
