What temp do I take Marley to hospital?

She just woke up & is MISERABLE. Her temp is 101.7 - should we take her to the emergency room? If not, what temp is cause for alarm?

?

Thanks!?

Re: What temp do I take Marley to hospital?

  • Ai!  Poor thing!  Have you been taking her temp regularly?  I think my girls sleep hot...if that made sense.  Try and take her temp again in 15-30 minutes.  And in the meantime, consider calling your pedi or the pedi-on-call.  That way, by the time they call you back, you can give them all the stats: temp, how long she's been running a temp, symptoms - appetitite, mood, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, etc.

Lots of love to you all!

  • 101.7 is high but not alarmingly high. Usually it isn't cause for alarm until 104. Another concern would be if it isn't responding at all to Tylenol. Give her some Tylenol---give her cooling measures (wet washcloth on the forehead, light clothing) and reevaluate in 30 minutes or so to see if that is working.

  • You should head to the ER @ 103. ?But make sure like Mia said she isn't hot from being covered up. Jacob sleeps hot too!

    Hope she feels better!

?I can guarantee you that 2 hours after Jacob falls asleep he will wake up wailing and drenched in sweat, ?this is with his a/c on too.?

  • Thanks. We just gave her 1/2 teaspoon of triminac kids. Can we mix that with the tylenol?
  • She sleeps extra hot. Wakes up soaking wet which is why I am so confused on what to do. I tried putting a cool washcloth on her, but she just isn't having it. I feel terrible. This is her first illness.

    ?

I appreciate all the advice. Thanks!?

  • My understanding of Triaminic is that is is a decongestant and antihistamine. As long as it doesn't contain acetaminophen (99% positive it doesn't---check the label)---you can definitely give it to her. Triaminic won't do anything for a fever---she needs a fever reducer like Tylenol (preferred)---which is also acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

  • You're doing great B!

I would suggest that you DO NOT mix meds.  Let the triaminic take its course and see if it helps.

Start a log, even if mental, as to times meds are given, symptoms at that time and if you think they get better.

    XOXOXO

  • Whew - doesn't have it in it, so I just gave her a small dose acetaminophen. Thanks Emily - I am so happy you were in the board tonight.
  • No problem. I hope she starts feeling better soon! You might consider giving her Tylenol around the clock (every 4 hours) through the night if she is still miserable---to keep the fever down. I'm sure it's just a virus--but a lot of the viruses kids are prone to include high fevers!

  • Poor Marley!!! Hopefully she's feeling all better this morning.  I've had several kids come down with a "fever virus" over the last few weeks.

One of our little boys woke up from nap yesterday burning up.  Took his temp (ear) and it was 104.0.  I called mom immediately and started with an icepack on the back of his neck, his back, forehead, anywhere he would let me.  He laid in my lap until his mom got there.  She was surprised at the temp when I called but it still took her 20 or so minutes to get there.  If she hadn't gotten there soon I was seriously going to strip him down and put him in the kitchen sink.  I kept checking his temp and when he went home it was 104.2 (although it seemed to vary on which ear I put it in ... anywhere from 103.4 - 104.2).  I couldn't believe she wasn't taking him to the ER.  She said she was going to give him tylenol (at least I think that's what she said I was more worried about her taking him to the doctor) and said she was taking him to urgent care when they opened at 6 (it was 4 then).
