Coconut Oil

Not necessarily a "green" topic, but does anyone use it?

I am looking forward to trying it (got 2 big jars on sale), but I don't even know what it tastes like, etc.  Looking forward to substituting out some of our other oils/butters/etc.  And my DD has horrible eczema so I am going to try it on her.

Any suggestions/thoughts/etc?

Re: Coconut Oil

  • I ordered a free sample and am looking forward to trying it. I bought some in spray form a year ago and liked it but DH didn't like the flavor it added to our eggs LOL. I haveheard that it's healthy and much better for you than, say, Canola oil.
  • I use it for some cooking, moisturizing, face cleaning. Love it!

  • Another big coconut oil fan here! The taste depends on if you got virgin or not. Virgin will taste like coconut, while the refined is pretty much taste and scent-free. I love it for my super dry legs.

  • I substituted it for canola in a cake recipe...I don't recommend that. Otherwise, I like cooking with it.
  • I cook eggs with it, but then I serve them with yams cooked in it, with garlic and rosemary. I like the coconut flavor.

I've made brownies with it too, but if you use the unrefined (as you should, IMO!) you need to know it will add coconuttiness!

Hmm spray coconut oil?? I'd be a little concerned what was in that. Usually spray oils have weird additives and coconut oil is generally solid until at 70 degrees or more.

  • I use it as body lotion! I have very very dry skin and it moisturizes pretty well! I do tend to smell like a restaurant afterwars, so I do a light application of a "pretty smelling" lotion afterwards so I don't reek of cooking oil. But it works great on skin!

It was at the health food store so I trusted it LOL. I'm giving it another try with Tropical Traditions which is big with Nourishing Traditions peeps so I think it's OK.

ETA: I'm trying coconut oil again, not the spray kind. I bought a Misto.

  • I just discovered how great it is for my DD's super curly, super dry hair.

    Magic.

  • So far I have only used it for face cleaning.  Great for removing eye makeup!

  • i've used it in a cake recipe. my DH commented that it was the best tasting cake.  i've used it for "frying".

i've used it for OCM face wash and moisturizer.  i've used it on DS's tushie and ouchies.

  • Use it -- love it! I use it as a moisturizer and thought it was going to be really greasy (duh), but surprisingly it gets absorbed really quickly and leaves your skin unbelieveably smooth. It was 8 bucks for a jar at the store, and has lasted me almost 2 mos. Yes

  • i started cooking with it tonight and i LOVED it. it has been sitting in my pantry for a long time, and i never knew what to do with it. tonight, i cooked curry with it and i am in LOVE!!!!
  • I've been adding a little to my shave oil, but now I can't wait to try it as a moisturizer on my freakishly dry skin.

  • It also works great as a *ahem* personal lubricant for sexy time.... but I think it breaks down latex so not w/ condoms.

  • Here's a question, and it might be dumb - if you put coconut oil in your hair, are you supposed to rinse it out? Mine looks greasy, even if I just use a little.
