Best way to keep strawberry plants alive?

So this is my first year trying strawberries, and they're growing and budding flowers now. I'm curious though since everyone says strawberries are so difficult to grow. Any suggestions on them? TIA!

  • I've never had a problem with strawberries. I just water them as needed and leave them to their own devices. You just need to be on the look out for occasional runners and snip them off, but seriously, they have been very easy for me.

  • Yum, there is nothing better than homegrown strawberries! I've always had good luck w them too and don't know what would make them particularly hard to grow. One thing I have read is to pinch the flower buds off the first year. Yes it means no fruit that first year but you get really vigorous, healthy plants and a whale of a crop in the second year. I did this w/ my first strawberry bed and got 2 amazing years out of it plus a 3rd so-so year. This year I dug the plants under and started a new patch in a different location.

Do you know what variety you're growing?

  • I think strawberries are difficult to grow from seed--but not particularly difficult if you buy plants.

  • I've never had trouble with strawberries. I grew mine from roots that were shipped to me. The first year they grew but not a great crop. Last year was a decent amount. This year we wereable to eat some every day plus make 20 jars of jam
