Skype

I may be behind on this technology, but what is skype and how do you use it?  Just wanting something to live video chat with my sister and family?  Is there a fee?  Anything else better or easier to use than skype?

Thanks!

Re: Skype

  • I freakin LOVE Skype!  I talk to my 1 year old niece about 3 times a week using it.  It's totally free and really easy to use!  All you need to do is download it and have a webcam on your computer and you can video chat with anyone else who has a skype account.

  • Skype to Skype "calls" are free.  If you have it installed on your computer/phone and your sister has it on her computer/phone, you will not pay.  The other popular alternative is Google talk/chat (many people use this in conjunction with gmail) which integrates video chat provided your computer is equipped with a webcam.  Both are fairly straightforward to use.

We actually use the "pay" Skype options as well. We live in Norway, and my family is in Indiana. DH's family is in India. Do we use Skype to call them. MIL has a Skype account, so we video chat with them for free, but my pants are not very tech savvy. We can call their home phone through Skype for 2 cents per minute, but we also pay around $60 per year for a US phone number through Skype. It doesn't cost anything for people in the US to call it, and it rings on our Skype phone here. It's so great for talking to people back home, since to them it's just a normal phone. We also use the free Skype to Skype calling when DH or I travel for work, since we have a second account.
