Re: Eco friendly insulated lunch totes (for kids)
Have you looked on Etsy?
Far and away the best ones I have found are the Built brand ones. They aren't particularly kiddy, and they don't insulate super well, but the major advantage they have is not being peices of crap that fall apart and have to be replaced all the time.
Every other brand we have used (and we have used a lot) the inner plastic cracks and falls apart, and then when your lunch containers inevitably leak, you get food juice in between the layers of fabric, plastic, and insulation, which of course gets nasty. They can't really be washed bc then you get water stuck in them along with the nasty food juice that never gets rinsed out very well.
The Built ones can be washed in the washer, which is a major score, IMO. We do have an REI oen that is pretty decent, and I think I have heard good thigns about the LL Bean ones in terms of durability. The most EF thing IMO is to use the lunch bag for a good long time, and not have to replace it annually bc it falls apart.
I second the Etsy idea.
I recently bought a bag for myself from this seller: http://www.etsy.com/shop/uhreusable
She has a few kid-friendly designs. I've only had the bag for a few weeks so I can't really speak to it's longevity, but it's a good quality. Even if you don't find anything from that particular seller, just do a search on there- you'll find a lot of options.
I bought a Laptop Lunchbox for myself, but it was too small, so I'm holding on to it for our yet-born children. It's that good of quality. It's a main case with several smaller boxes inside, some have lids. Everything goes into the dishwasher, and it's BPA free.
