Hanging petunia plants

For some reason I have such an issue taking care of my petunias in a hanging planter. When I buy the plant it is brimming with flowers everywhere, but after time they stop blooming as much. I make sure it's dead-headed frequently, I water it daily b/c I know it dries out easier. I cannot figure it out. Should I be using fertilizer or some kind of plant food? My petunias in the ground flourish so well. I got this hanger as a gift this year and I'm thinking in the future I won't be spending money on a hanging petunia again. Any ideas?

Re: Hanging petunia plants

  • are the planters in full sun? have you checked for aphids
  • Container plants do need fertilizer.  I'd try a water soluble one that you mix in your watering can.  If you think about it, plants in a container only have X sq inches of soil to pull nutrients from.  Who knows how long they've been in that container, so the nutrients are probably depleted.  Add them back with fertilizer.
