October 2009 Weddings
Dear Community,

Our tech team has launched updates to The Nest today. As a result of these updates, members of the Nest Community will need to change their password in order to continue participating in the community. In addition, The Nest community member's avatars will be replaced with generic default avatars. If you wish to revert to your original avatar, you will need to re-upload it via The Nest.

If you have questions about this, please email help@theknot.com.

Thank you.

Note: This only affects The Nest's community members and will not affect members on The Bump or The Knot.

Oooooooooooooh good.

So apparently someone got into my e-mail account, collected all contacts and sent SPAM mail in my name.  Fantastic.

And thank you, Google mail, for automatically saving any person I ever e-mailed for the past X years into my contacts list.  I'm glad the following people received the SPAM:

- Former employers I no longer wish to associate with

- Any university HR office I ever sent a resume to

- Any wedding vendor I ever e-mailed with...

Super. Huh?

Re: Oooooooooooooh good.

  • The same thing happened to DH a couple of months ago.  Everyone he has ever contacted via email got an ad for a male enhancement drug.

I think my dad was the only one who found it funny.

  • Yuck! There seems to be a lot of this lately. I'll never understand why some people get joy out of giving people computer viruses and such. Really, do you get anything out of it?
  • How frustrating.  I'm sorry!

  • Thanks, ladies.  Anyone have any ideas on how to protect myself from this in the future?

Since it's technically my old e-mail account, I already deleted all the contacts and changed the password.

  • That also happened to me (just my aol account, waiting for it to happen to my yahoo account).  Just keep changing your password.
  • ugh... that sucks. That happened to my gmail a few months ago- I had the same mix of people in my "people I've contacted even just once in the past 7 years" list- soooo embarrassing!

This link covers everything you should do afterward. Here is a way to report it to the gmail team, and here is how to find the headers they refer to. And for your own morbid curiosity (I included this info in the message to the gmail team as well), you can go to "account activity" at the bottom of your page, and see where it was recently logged in from (one will probably be obviously suspicious if it's still recent).

And FWIW, it happened to me the same day I installed a "google lab" app that lets you send SMS texts from gmail. I don't want to be all crazy-conspiracy-omg-they're-totally-related, but omg they're totally related.
