Renovating nesties...

Who has renovated their home or is currently renovating their home?

What kind of projects have you done/are you doing?

How long did the process take you?

Any suggestions for home improvement stores beyond HD and Lowes?

Our upcoming projects include installing a shower, backsplash for the kitchen, and landscaping.  ::sigh::  It never ends.

Re: Renovating nesties...

  • I renovated the bathrooms at my old house.  For one we did "Re-Bath" through home depot, which worked fine.  Then for the other, we had a family friend install a tile shower with bench etc.

I'd highly recommend him!  Email me for his number :)

  • We're not really renovating - just painting and such.  But in the relatively near future we plan on redoing the bathrooms, and are considering changing out all of our tile/carpet to wood flooring.

You should check out the Habitat for Humanity stores - I've heard they have some great renovating supplies there.

  • Ohhh I'd love that!  I just emailed you, thanks Jen!  :)

  • Who has renovated their home or is currently renovating their home? started by def not even half way done!!!

What kind of projects have you done/are you doing? the townhouse was sooo bad when we bought it! we have pathed holes in the walls, washed the wall ekkk, painted the entire house ourselves haha more so alex, painted the popcorn ceiling, replaced all the electrical, re-did some plumbing, replaced carpeting, completed the wood flooring downstairs, painted the kitchen cabinets, painted all the doors & stair rail, repaired part of the a/c, cleaned up part of the patio and planted a small garden...wow looks like a lot but we are planning a major reno in a few yrs. we want to strip everything and plan on paying for everything in cash so we are saving every penny possible!!

How long did the process take you? everything we have done so far was done in about 4 wks or so - the re-wiring/electrical took the longest but hubsters is a genesis and did it all!!

Any suggestions for home improvement stores beyond HD and Lowes? we have started to buy a few odds and ends but nothing major. our list of places are: toilets - sam's club (the button kind for $99 each), bathroom hardware - costco (entire sets for like $50), flooring - big lots (we found a huge box of tile for our baths, real tile not the plastic kind for $30), new kitchen & bath cabinets - ikea, kitchen hardware - ikea (stainless steel modern pulls for like $4 for 2 sets i think)

    Anniversary
  • Who has renovated their home or is currently renovating their home? Well, we bought a foreclosure, so we have been up to our eyeballs in re-dos.  Plus, I come from a fam that is all about remodeling.  My pops is very knowledgeable about most diy things--my hubs, um notsomuch...What kind of projects have you done/are you doing?  We are more in the what haven't we done boat...all new: flooring--wood, carpet, tile. toilets, water heater, 2 windowspartially new: kitchen cabinets w/sink, faucet, lightspainted the entire house--primer, ceilings (2/3rds of them), every room--it was A LOTstarted landscaping--as our hoa has certain requirements--have a plan to work on more when it cools off again How long did the process take you? I feel like I'll never be done, not necc in a bad way, I really enjoy all of it, though it can be oh so spendyAny suggestions for home improvement stores beyond HD and Lowes? I mostly prefer Lowes, but have ordered things online from more 'boutique' manufacturers.  I ditto the Habitat stores for some stuff--though the last two times I was there, I wasn't very impressed.  I'd also consider craigslist depending on what you're looking for.  I'm also a garage sale junkie (literally and figuratively hahaha).  We tried to shop around and get the best deals, but I tend to like really specific things, so the deals were not always in my favor.  Even now there are things I'd change--but then this post would be crazy long. This is prolly a way long answer for what you are looking for anyway :P
  • Well its nice to know we're not the only ones out there trying to complete this never ending project...

It really is draining, and frustrating.  What I wouldn't give to be done already.

Right now I'm trying to research shower surrounds.  Awhile back I posted an update that we decided to go with fiberglass, but HD and Lowes both want $500-600!  Surprise  Which, IMO, is completely absurd; I think they've really marked it up.  Now we're back to considering engineered stone and quartz - if we're going to spend that kind of money I want stone, and I want it installed professionally, lol.

We also need to landscape, our yard is embarrassing.  We haven't lifted a finger outside the house yet.  There are huge weeds, ugly/sparse gravel, a gaping hole from where the previous owners started building a jacuzzi (but ran out of money....hence the foreclosure, lol).  Oh yes and a side yard stacked high with construction debris.

Hopefully this weekend we'll make it to a tile store and I can install our backsplash...  Ahh I get way stressed when I start thinking about the list of things to do.
