Poll: Favorite Appetizers?

What is your all time favorite appetizer, either to serve others or to enjoy yourself?

Mine: Good, old fashioned meatballs in marinara sauce.

Re: Poll: Favorite Appetizers?

  • I really enjoy shrimp as an appetizer - fairly light and low-cal, but enough to keep me find mindlessly eating chips. My two favorite recipes: Spicy Grilled Shrimp and Herb Grilled Shrimp, either served hot or at room temperature
  • Cocktail weinies or bacon wrapped water chestnuts!

Awww...I love some cocktail shrimp! Too bad my H is allergic...I love crab dip, too, but that's a no go with him around, too.

  • I love canapes, both making them and eating myself.  Basically, the prettier it is on a plate, the more inclined I am to gravitate towards it.

Maybe this is regional (although I see you're in VA, so maybe not), but I had never heard of meatballs as an appetizer prior to coming on The Nest.

Lol, ditto this.  If I remember right, OP is in VA because of her husband's job.  My first thought when I read the post was "good old fashioned??"  I'm familiar with Swedish meatballs (though I've only seen them served once) but I've never seen meatballs in marinara anywhere other than a plate of spaghetti Stick out tongue

Should I go all regional, too?  My favorite app these days is pepper jelly over cream cheese served with crackers.  I know people who aren't familiar are thinking, "pepper?  jelly?!  cream cheese?  ew!" lol because that was what I thought before I had it.

I also have a recipe for tomato basil parmesan tartlettes that's pretty fab.

Actually, I was born and raised in VA. I live about 30 minutes from the town I grew up in. Meatballs, particularly in marinara sauce, are as common as ham biscuits here for appetizers. Perhaps it's more a VA thing than a southern thing.

  • Roasted Artichoke Dip - even though roasting takes longer, it is totally worth it.

Herbed Goat Cheese stuffed tomatoes - again takes a little time, but so yummy!

Some one on here turned me onto tomato blossoms.  They are fabulous, but again, take a bit of time.

  • rumaki.  Or really anything wrapped in bacon.

I'm also a big fan of a Paula Deen shrimp dip.

My favorite stupid simple app- 8 oz cream cheese, a container of Old English cheese, a tspish of garlic salt.  Serve with bits of bagel

Hot crab dip, sour cream green onion dip (cold) with potato chips, potato skins, bruschetta, toasted ravioli, nachos.
  • A year or so ago, a friend and I came up with the idea to use apple gouda chicken sausages for a pigs in the blanket type appetizer.  We cut the sausages into thirds and used 1/3 of crescent triangle to wrap.  They are delicious, so easy to make, and have become a fav in our circle.  I made them for a family thing and now my sister's BF is hooked too!

And I love a good cheese plate, especially if it involves goat cheese and/or brie.  I think I could live on cheese, fruit, and wine. :)

  • even after years of making it, I still love spinach artichoke dip (the hot kind, with spinach, mayo, cream cheese, Italian blend cheese, etc.)

I'm a big fan of a layered goat cheese/cream cheese spread where you do a cheese layer, a pesto layer, another cheese layer and then sundried tomatoes. So good.

Shrimp cocktail is another big favorite.

  • Sausage and cheese dip with fritos or Paula Deen's crabbies.
  • Buffalo Chicken dip

Cream cheese, blue cheese dressing, Frank's Hot Wing Sauce, shredded chicken,  shredded cheese and baked in the oven (not the slow cooker!)

     ...so healthy ;)

  • I had a friend that tried to "healthy" this up a bit and it was still good.  She used low fat ingredients and served with baked tortilla chips and celery - it was still quite yummy!
  • I love spinach dip (the recipe on the back of the Knorr's vegetable soup packet) with hawaiian bread.
  • Baked Brie is my all time favorite... but if I'm home and hungry I will run to store and get a pound of bacon and make bacon wrapped pineapple. YUM
