First Time Visiting Nashville-Need A Car?

Hi Ladies,

We will be visiting Nashville for the first time and want to do all the touristy things and eat at the best restaurants.  When we travel to a city, we love to walk or take public transportation all day long to see the sights, then take cabs at night to restaurants and bars.

Is Nashville the kind of city where we can do this? Is it a "walking" city? Or, is it so spread out that we would benefit from a rental car?  Do we need a rental car to see the sights, or can we walk or rely on public transportation?  I'm sorry for all the questions Embarrassed

Also, we are trying do decide where to stay - West End area (Lowes) or Downtown (Renaissance) and just realized that if we have to rent a car for the entire stay (5 nights) then it wouldn't matter what part of town we stayed in because we'd be driving everywhere anyway. Is that true?

I would truly appreciate any help, advice or opinions you can share. Again, sorry for all the questions!

Re: First Time Visiting Nashville-Need A Car?

  • I would probably recommend renting a car. ?The "sights" are pretty spread out, and we really don't have reliable public transportation (unfortunately). ?For instance, the Opryland Hotel and Grand Ole Opry (which I consider can't miss tourist destinations) are at least a 10-15 min drive from downtown.

If you're looking to stay closer to all the action, I would recommend staying downtown. ?The Renaissance is within easy walking distance of most of the popular bars, Broadway, etc. ?As for restaurants, most of our favorites are closer to the West End area.

Anyway, hopefully I've been somewhat helpful. ?Hopefully others will be able to give you additional insight. ?Enjoy your trip!?

  • If you stayed downtown, you could probably get by without a car, and you could just take a cab to go other places or I think Opryland runs buses between the hotel and downtown for $10-15. From downtown to West End/Vandy area isn't very far, so it wouldn't be an expensive cab ride. Some restaurants (Sunset Grill I know does this) have a mini-bus that will pick you up from your hotel to come eat at their restaurant.

I would recommend that you plan out your itinerary, decide what you absolutely must see, and then decide whether you need a car.

  • Aterr0 & kmays - thank you so much for your replies!  We want to see sights both near downtown and the West End areas and don't want to get stuck racking up cab fares, but then again, parking and gas for a rental car may be just as expensive.  This is what we are trying to figure out.

We are visiting Franklin and have to rent a car for that, so maybe we should keep the car for 2 days - one day for Franklin and the next for sightseeing...

Keep the help and advice coming!

    TIA!
