Help me think of plants

We just put a fence in our backyard. I want to now landscape the fence. however, I tend to look around and see what is in bloom now and want to plant that... but I know I need to think year round. I'm in zone 6

In that back corner I think I'm going put a fruit tree but fence that runs along the property line here can't have anything that blocks the flow of stormwater run-off. Do you think I could plant a couple vines? What kind?

I'm thinking I want to plant two clamatis (sp?) on either side of the gate. In front of the fence by the drive way I was thinking of just planting a row of knockout roses. Behind the fence in the corner I was going to put a crepe myrtle. On the inside of the fence where the knockout roses would be I was thinking of just planting day lilies.  Along the hill I was thinking of doing either hydrangeas or berries like blueberries and currants.

In this corner I want to create a nice little sitting area. I was thinking a crepe myrtle, but not sure what else to plant.

Here is a picture for scale of the whole area

Any suggestions in general on plantings to create year round interest?

Re: Help me think of plants

  • What about Crossvine for the area near the gate? It's evergreen, so you don't have to worry about die back in the fall and winter.

Do you have enough space on the hill to do berries?

I'm partial to hydrangeas because they are just too prtty not to have! I wish I could be more help on landscaping, but I suck at it. My gardens are still kind of a hodge podge - and this is after I had the nursery draft a plan for me! Ha!
