Detroit Nestie Transplant questions

Hi Ladies. My husband just got a job transfer to Kansas City, MO. He's a territory manager for a consumer packaged goods company, so we can really live anywhere around that area in MO or KS. It's my understanding that the Kansas side is nicer....is that correct? Do you have any recommendations on places to live? We are selling our home here and are going to take a big loss, so we are looking to rent an apartment or home with a garage. We are coming from an upper middle class area so we would like to move to a similar locale. We have a dog and take her to a dog park right by our home--is there anything like that around? We don't have kids so schools are not really a concern, yet.

Sorry for all the questions, but one more: how do you go about finding a job? Are there regional headhunters or recruiting agencies or job boards an outsider wouldn't know about? I'm a bank attorney, so I'd be looking for an in-house job (where I only have to be licensed in one state) or a legal-ish job where I'm using my skills but not actually practicing (something like compliance, etc).

Thank you SO much for any help you can give. We know nothing about the area, so any info helps!

Re: Detroit Nestie Transplant questions

  • We live in Lenexa, KS and love it here. We are minutes from Shawnee Mission Park (which has a huge dog park) and maybe 15 min from Thomas Stoll Park in Olathe (which has a doggie park)

I've lived in several areas around KC and like Overland Park/Lenexa/Shawnee area the best on the Kansas side. We previously lived in an apartment community right near the park before we got married. We live in a quiet, young to middle age neighborhood not too far away, now in a house. I also know a great landlord who owns several properties and sells houses in kc and has a great reputation around here :)

    As far as jobs... Yikes!

I tried careerbuilder, craigslist, and a couple agencies in town. For a legal job, I'm not real sure.

I found the job I have now on Craigslist! (scary and crazy, but true and have been there since the end of January)

I would try local government sites, maybe or call around and maybe someone can point you in the right direction. (Sorry, I'm not much help!)

  • We just moved from the Missouri side to the Kansas side. Currently we live in Overland Park and I have to say I really like it here. Yes on the Missouri side it's cheaper to tag your car and there is lower taxes on purchasing food but we paid a higher rate with our renter's insurance. I also felt like when we live on the Missouri side we had to drive to the places we want and now that we live on the Kansas side everything is right there. I feel like we have so much more available to us. I don't have much information about a dog park because we have on in our apartment complex. I felt when we moved to the Missouri side you got more sq footage in apartment for a cheaper price but now I think you just have to search out what you want because we have slightly less sq footage for $100/month less.

Sorry I am not much help with the job search as I am currently searching for a job. I just graduated in May and haven't had much luck. I have been getting lots of interivews though.

  •  It's my understanding that the Kansas side is nicer....is that correct? Well I will admit to being a little biased bc other than a year lease on the Plaza (on the MO side) I have been a KS girl my whole life.  (and I married a fanatic Jayhawk fan--the border war between KU and MU is something you will become very familiar with once you get here Smile) I prefer KS to MO, there are some very nice areas in the suburbs of KCMO on the MO side, Blue Springs and Lees Summit are two examples; but I live in Lenexa now and really love the area.  My neighbors house is on the market now if you are interested lol.

We have a dog and take her to a dog park right by our home--is there anything like that around?  There are several parks in the Johnson county area that have dog areas, or off leash areas.  If we ever take our dog we go to Shawnee Mission Park bc its literally a block from our house.

The job front is a lil sketchy in areas of law from what I know from friends who are looking, the websites PP mentioned would probably be where I would start the search,

  • I'm a Realtor in the metro area.  I sell on both sides of the state line and I think you that you should live on the KS side.  After describing all of the things that are important to you as well as what you're used to, I'd recommend living in Lenexa, Olathe or Overland Park.  These cities have the amenities that you're looking for.

    Good luck!

  • Hi CollieFlower!

My husband and I are Detroit transplants as well.  So I totally understand where you are coming from.  There are nice spots on both sides, but it seems as if people gravitate toward the KS side more specifically the Overland Park/Lenexa/Olathe area.  We are renting a townhome in the Northland on the Missouri side.  We just really like the area.  There seems to be a bit more duplexes that what you will find in Oakland/Wayne Counties at least from what I saw.  As far as the job situation, my husband went through a recruiter.

After commuting back and forth to KC over the last couple of years I am ready to FINALLY to move in two weeks!

  • Thanks everyone for the replies. I am coming down July 14 for an interview and to look at rentals. Wish us luck! :-)

  • We are considering a move to KC area also and just be aware that if your dog is a bully breed, there are very few places to live.  This is a huge problem we are encountering.  Our bully breed dog is fine w/our 17mo and 3y.o. kids but can't live in KC or most surrounding cities.  Very frustrating.
